Notes From Our D. S.

by Rev. John Calhoun

I am encouraged to hear from various sources a resonance with our challenge:

      1+1=Many

            Each Christian, a new Christian

                  Each congregation, a new congregation

                        Each pastor, a new pastor

I know this is within God's will and purpose and am confident that those who dare believe it can happen will find it to be true.

PALCON

The Pastor's and Leader's Conference just held at PLNU was a great success. Those in attendance were presented insights and inspiration. Thanks to everyone that joined in the prayer support for this important time for our church. The prayers were definitely felt and many good things are expected.

NYI

Our District NYI President, Shawn Sampson, has resigned his position in order to enroll at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena. We wish his family well.

Brent Kall is the Vice President and will lead the District NYI during this change.

Q2004: Living the Word

The 2004 General NYI Bible Quiz Tournament was held June 22-26 and the Northern California District was represented by a team of All-Stars. After several competitions within our district the top quizzers were invited to be on the All-Star team.

A round of applause, please, as our NorCal All-Stars tied for 2nd place in their competition pool of 9 teams!

A special round of applause also goes to Abe Powers who, as an individual quizzer, finished 3rd overall from a tournament pool of 175 participants.

Congratulations to each member of the team. We know that  quizzing takes many hours of study and we appreciate you representing our district so well!

NMI Update

by Rev. John Wilcox, Santa Cruz

A Moment in Missions

Around the world the Church of the Nazarene has a total of 45 International Universities, Bible Schools and Seminaries. One of the needs that these schools all share is the need of prayer, lifting in intercessory prayer the faculty, staff and students at these schools. The global Church of the Nazarene needs pastors, pastors that have been trained with a holiness message so that they have the tools to share the good news of Jesus to those in their native language. A suggestion to help you think about this need is to spend every coffee break this week, with a cup of coffee, a quiet place, and a time of prayer. The Lord will bless you, as well as hear and answer your prayers for these people that are serving Him by going to school or by educating.

LINKS: Loving, Interested, Nazarene, Knowing and Sharing!

Have you made contact this year with your LINKS missionary? Just a reminder that Christmas is just around the corner. Each church needs to send the LINKS Christmas money to our District NMI Treasurer Donna Rickard. If you plan on sending a package for Christmas (and your missionary would love to get one), consider mailing the package at least 2 if not 3 months ahead of time, due to the overseas delivery time.

LINKS is Nazarenes joining hands to support our missionaries through:

      Prayer

            Letters and Cards

                  Packages

                        Special Needs and Requests

Celebrating Marie Johnson

Marie Johnson's 100th birthday was given by her local church, International Christian Center (San Jose Central) About 200 persons attended, 57 being her own offspring and family. Many of her family are in ministry and some are professors at PLNU.

District Superintendent John Calhoun presented Marie with a gift from the district - a clock with the inscription "The Northern California District Church honors Marie Johnson on her 100th birthday for living an exemplary life in word, thought and deed in her service to Jesus Christ."

Software: Microsoft Office                                 Software: Microsoft Office

(Rev. Calhoun presents clock)                       (Plaque for the educational building, now named in her honor)

She reads without glasses, has all of her teeth and lives alone in the same house in Los Gatos since 1944. Marie exchanges email with her Apple computer, is a member of the church board and has been a very positive encourager to all of her pastors and fellow church members.

Congratulations to Marie on this great milestone and thank you for being such an inspiration to us!

Please support Pastor Samuel Chun with your work effort and also your prayers.

Come for all day or any part of the day on August 21 to make final preparations for the opening of this new church.

If you need more information, directions, or wish to speak with someone about supplies, contact Rev. Samuel Chun at (510) 481-5001 or you may call Larry Fitch (home: (925) 432-6319, office: (925) 939-3100 or cell (925) 575-4309).

From The Editor

by Robin Wagganer, San Jose First

Silly me! I must watch too many movies or I've read too many...well, comic books.  I thought that I would be inundated with pieces from all over our District and deciding what to include each month would be tough.

Maybe things will change down the road, but for now I would like to encourage you to contribute. Tell us what you are doing to reach out to your local community. Share stories of celebrations from your Church.

Where are our Lois Lanes and Jimmy Olsens? Having someone report from the All-Nighter would be fun! Pictures from the Hana Korean work days would be a great way to show the progress of the efforts!

We lead such busy lives that it's tough to maintain friendships with our next-door neighbors, much less our District community. By sharing through The Bridge, we can all be a little closer than geography may allow.

And I could pretend to be a female Perry White!
