October is Clergy Appreciation Month
What is Clergy Appreciation Month?
Clergy Appreciation Month is a special time that congregations set aside each year to honor their pastors and pastoral families for the hard work, sacrificial dedication and multiple blessings provided by these special people. It is typically scheduled in October, but can be held at any time that is convenient for the church and the community. It is also important to remember that appreciation and affirmation of our spiritual leaders is appropriate throughout the entire year.
Why is
The nature of the service provided by pastors and their families is unique. God has entrusted to them one of the most precious of assignments - the spiritual well-being of His flock. When a pastor becomes ineffective, the very souls of his or her parishioners are endangered. When eternity is in the balance, we should all be concerned.
Pastors and their families live under incredible pressures. Their lives are played out in a fishbowl, with the entire congregation and community watching their every move. They are expected to have ideal families, to be perfect people, to always be available, to never be down and to have all the answers we need to keep our own lives stable and moving forward. Those are unrealistic expectations to place on anyone, yet most of us are disappointed when a pastor becomes overwhelmed, seems depressed, lets us down or completely burns out.
That's why God has instructed us to recognize His servants.
The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching" (1 Timothy 5:17).
The good news is that we can make a difference! Clergy Appreciation Month is one way we can counter the negative erosion in the lives of our spiritual leaders with the positive affirmation they need.
What can we do?
There are two ways to help your pastors and their families feel appreciated.
* Figure out what you can do personally to recognize and honor these leaders. A simple card, an invitation to lunch, a promise to pray for them or an offer to babysit, wash a car or mow a lawn make wonderful statements.
* Share the
concept of
Doesn't your pastor and his family deserve this kind of recognition? Do something about it today!

Happy 70th Anniversary to the Dawes!
Rev. Gordon and Frances Dawes celebrated their 70th Wedding anniversary on Sunday, September 25th. They have been a vital part of the Northern California District for many years. Gordon pastored many churches as full time assigned and interim pastor. Frances has served as local NWMS President and on the district N.W.M.S./ N.M.I. council for several years.
Gordon and Frances have known the Lord for 66 years coming to faith at a tent camp meeting held next to the newlyweds home in 1939. They have many great stories to tell of God's working in and through their ministry throughout the years.
Gordon and Frances continue to be warriors in prayer. They pray for their church family and pastor, district leadership, general leadership and missionaries by name every morning.

Their celebration was held at the Summerville Retirement Residence in Hayward. Congratulations Rev. and Mrs. Dawes.
We met Gordon and Frances Dawes when we came to the NorCal District in March, 1984. They were retired from active pastoring, but Gordon continued to provide pulpit supply for the district churches when needed.
Gordon and Frances have the gift of hospitality and often entertained in their home. We were their guests on several occasions, and always enjoyed a delicious, gourmet meal.
What we will always remember about our friends is that they prayed for us as their district leaders every morning. They were also faithful to pray for pastors, missionaries, and general leaders.
They are models of a very loving relationship. They showed their love and affection for each other in the way they treated one another in public. They were a "classy" couple, even their dress complemented each other with Gordon's tie matching Frances' outfit.
We celebrate you, Gordon and Frances Dawes, on your 70th wedding anniversary. God bless you for your wonderful years of ministry in the Kingdom! You are loved!
Clari and Sue Kinzler
(D. S. on the Norcal District for 17 years)

by Rev. Donabel Martin, District NYI President
Greetings from NorCal NYI. We have had a wonderful and busy season with our teens this year. Please take this opportunity to catch up on your future.
May: Stepping Out
As part of our NYI Convention we make it a priority to touch the broken and the lost just as Jesus did. This year we set out for the streets of San Francisco, the UN Plaza to be exact. There we hung out with the homeless and with others who needed food. We were able to hear their stories and share with them ours. Some allowed us to pray with them and others just needed lunch. This was a very eye opening day for many of our teens and adults. This is not something to be afraid of, but something to embrace. If you know someone who went to this experience, ask them to tell you some of the stories they heard and now are a part of.
June: Global NYI Convention
What a privilege it was for us to attend our General NYI Convention. Your delegates this year were Jennifer Irish, Anna (Rushing) Miller, Gary Ball, and Donabel Martin. We had a wonderful time getting to know people from other districts and world regions. At this year's proceeding we elected a new Global NYI President- Monte Cyr.
July: Camps
Sr. High Camp was once again held at Lake Shasta where we had houseboat camps. The number of students we had this year was more than 70, very similar to the numbers we've had in the past, however there were many new faces and many new friendships formed. The theme of this year's camp was Unsinkable Faith, our speaker Ken Osso from Pasco, Washington conveyed that with powerful and captivating preaching as well as, if not more so in his interaction with students and adults. We also had a new camp director this year, Drew Romero Youth Pastor from Napa, Drew and his staff did an amazing job.
Jr./Mid High Camp took place this year at Rock-n-Water, in Coloma right on the American River. This is the first time we have had Jr./Mid High Camp for a while and it was an adventure (for the teen and the adults). Our camp director Pastor Gary Ball challenged the youth workers with one goal this year; let us work towards helping our teens form lasting friendships and by the end of the three days we saw relationships forming. Our speaker this year was Pastor Tim King from Salinas; it was great having him interacting with students and adults.
September: District NYI All-Nighter
The annually anticipated All Nighter took Santa Rosa by storm for the very first time. This year's event was coordinated by Pastor Joel Tipit. The events were broomball, bowling, roller-skating and a concert by Zero Theory.
I would like to say thanks to all the adults who invested their time and resources to this summer's activities. We couldn't have done it without you. We continue to ask for your prayers as we prepare for next year's activities, it coming sooner than you can imagine.
