David & Jing Hoi

Celebrating their 10th Anniversary at New Life Church

On Sunday, October 15th the congregations of New Life gathered to celebrate 10 great years of ministry.  David and Jing arrived in the fall of 1996 to launch our Chinese ministry.  This ministry grew into 2 separate congregations, Mandarin and Cantonese.

Jing serves in several areas, Missions President, Mandarin Worship Leader and helps guide the Friday night fellowship.

Their 2 children, Josiah and Dorcas are growing up before our eyes and are now fully engaged in activities such as teen and children’s quizzing, district events, and music ministry.  We thank God for their dedication and faithful service to the people of New Life.

The Point Church Ministries (San Jose)

This was the first year that the Annual Chinese Festival for San Jose was held in a church.  We had at least 850 in attendance and enjoyed an evening of children's groups of Chinese schools performing various traditional and nontraditional dance wonderfully sprinkled with original rhymes, instruments, beautiful costumes from a variety of regions in China, and recitations demonstrating the youth's accomplishment of the heart language. The real wins were:

1.      The positioning of the church as a center for Chinese people, their interests, and worship opportunities.

2.       The presentation of the gospel message for the first time at the annual festival.  Reverend Paul Lam shared a brief gospel message, the Chinese congregation sang and Tina Fung sang with the children of the church giving interpretative motions.

We rejoice in the effective use of the resource God has given.

We just launched our "one church" youth ministry under Pastor Amer's Khokhar leadership.  The first night we had 70 in attendance and know of 30 who were at the city wide Harvest crusade from Spanish congregation. We have the capability to go over 100 youth very soon. Praise the Lord.

"Inventing new ways to love people"....

1.       We rejoice in ministries begun at The Point that connect with the needs and interests of our community. We now have 84 people who have registered in our Tuesday through Friday program of ESL, exercise and citizenship classes! We are enjoying getting acquainted with our neighbors!

2.       We found out that a local college could not accommodate the overwhelming interest in badminton. This is a sport relished in Chinese culture. So now Friday evenings at The Point our gym is full of badminton and is pulling together people from other cultures.

3.       An organization called Kids Club has come to our church because of our international composition. This organization has begun 23 elementary aged, after school Bible Clubs in the greater San Jose area. Our church was challenged to sponsor the newest one opening in our community. Now our international team goes to teach the Bible, discuss in small groups, pray, have fun and build relationships with families in the community through this new ministry, Kids Club. Thanks be to God for this great opportunity to connect with families in our community. Only about 10% of the Kids Club children attend church.

4.       Line Dancing has become the biggest "small group" ministry in the church. We have found this Texas style folk dance to connect cross-culturally....who would have thought it....people of all nations like to "kick it up" to twangy country music!

Africa is a continent of children.  Children under 14 years of age consist of nearly a third of the world’s population.  More than 300 million live in Africa.

The Church of the Nazarene is reaching these children with the gospel.  Nazarene membership in Africa reached 300,000 members.  In the next five years, the church plans to reach out to four million children through evangelistic and discipleship programs.

Nazarene Missions International (NMI)

Missionaries and Christmas

Have you sent your LINKS missionary a Christmas package yet?  It is not too late if you do it in the next couple of weeks and send it by air.  Remember them somehow, whether a package or a blitz of cards, or a gift of cash sent to the General Treasurer for them.   Maybe you will choose to do all three, but please do something.  Let them know that the Nor Cal Nazarenes appreciate all they do on the mission field.

Thanksgiving and World Missions

An opportune time to think about all the “things” that God has given to us.  How grateful are we for His provisions in our life.  Whether we are rich or poor, the Lord has given to us this occasion to live and give to Him.  In a couple of weeks your church will be taking the Thanksgiving offering for World Missions.  Give something special to the Lord not just because there is an offering, but because you are truly thankful for the blessings you have been given.

International Day of Prayer

Sunday, November 12th, all Nazarenes have been encouraged to join Christians around the world to pray for the Persecuted Church.  This special time gives the Christian community a time to remember those that are suffering because they serve the risen Christ.

NIGERIA—In March 2006 it was reported that a young man had been abducted twice. ‘Tumu’ was apparently targeted by a cult because he comes from a well-known Christian family. The first time, Tumu was threatened, his abductors were distracted, and he ran. Tumu moved 500 miles away where the same group abducted him again. Tumu had to watch as another captive’s heart was cut out. After unsuccessful attempts to cut out Tumu’s heart, he was beaten and dumped in a field. Tumu, traumatized, did not speak for a year. Prayer has brought Tumu back to a normal life.

.

TURKEY—In January a Christian leader was attacked by five Muslims claiming to want to know more about Christ. Kamil Kiroglu was leaving church after services when four young Turkish men and an older man claiming to be from Turkmenistan, approached him. Kiroglu became suspicious when he found himself alone with the men. They began to beat him and threatened to kill him if he didn’t deny Christ. However, the attackers knocked him unconscious and fled.

How to Pray…

·         Pray for them to know that when their persecutors strike it is an indication that God is working and their enemies see spiritual battles being won for God.

·         Pray that they will see the church growing around them. Persecution inevitably leads to growth.

·         Pray for God’s presence to go with them into and through their persecution. Ask God to keep them strong and true.

·         Pray for their families and fellow believers, that they will be strengthened. Ask God to be with their families often left with no means of financial or emotional support.

·         Pray for the salvation for their enemies and persecutors.

·         Pray for the world not facing persecution that God will remind us to continue to uphold those who are suffering.

Sunday School Ministries (SSM)

ATTENTION DISCIPLE MAKERS!

I was encouraged at a recent meeting of Sunday School leaders as we gathered in Kansas City.  Amidst the questions and discussions regarding discipleship, I sensed a gnawing need among many of us to become more effective at connecting people with God in authentic relationship.

Dr. Woodie Stevens, our new Director of SSM (formerly the D. S. of New Mexico) is VERY open to your concerns, ideas, and input regarding anything and everything to do with disciple making, small groups, Sunday School, etc.  I want to encourage you to get his attention EARLY ON in his tenure.  HE REALLY DOES WANT TO LISTEN!  And as they say, the squeaky wheel gets the grease.  So take the minute or two to zip him an e-mail at ssm@nazarene.org.

Please be praying for a fruitful day as our Spanish-speaking ministers gather on Saturday, November 11th for a day of equipping at The Point.  The theme for the day is "Transforming the Vision, Equipping Us for the Mission" with guest speaker Rev. Marcos Cisneros from Rancho Cucamonga.  Pastor Oscar Morales is giving leadership to the event.

Be watching for a special "Connecting with God's Word" emphasis next Spring between Easter and Pentecost Sunday.  You will hear more about this in January 2007.
