"Be Healthy, Make Disciples, Train Disciple Makers"

Dr. John H. Calhoun, District Superintendent

This month we emphasis the first of the three challenges in our theme for this year-Be Healthy!

By now, each church should have conducted the Church Health Survey.  This tool will allow for a closer look at the areas of church life that need most attention.

Those of you that have already taken the survey need to keep focused on implementing change that is needed that comes from your health survey.

We will publish to the District Assembly the status of each church in this area.

P. S.  This is the year for 100% payment on budgets.

Rev. William McMahon, Elder  -  Passes to Heaven

Rev. William McMahon, one of our long-time pastor’s and elder’s on the Norcal District went to be with our Lord on December 29, 2006.   He and Ellen were married for 69 years, and he celebrated his 90th birthday.

Rev. McMahon arrived on our district in 1955 and ministered in Lodi until 1959.  He then ministered at the Berkeley Church for a number of years in the 60’s.  He pastored the Daly City Broadmoor Church in Daly City up until 1980.  He retired several years later.  He was a gentleman and a pleasure to visit with.  He always ordered a district journal to keep current with the happenings on the district.  He will be missed!

Ellen McMahon is now residing with her daughter, Ruthada Bumgartner at 4421 Wyman Dr., Sacramento, CA  95821.

News from The Point (San Jose)

We just had the highest attendance of the church's history at San Jose First, now The Point....806 worshipers. New people come every Sunday.

Two new ways for us to show Christ's love (inventing new ways to love people for Christ's sake):

1.  We have begun a Community Center ministry Tuesday through Friday. It offers citizenship classes, ESL, and exercise groups. There are future plans to expand the activities offered and the target audience. Many who come are atheists and have reason from their past experiences to not trust institutions. However, in the past two weeks, for the first time, two people from our Community Center accepted Christ's offer of forgiveness of sins. One said, "we see that you people are doing this from your heart." Thanks be to God!

2. We have begun a weekly, after school, Kids Club, at a nearby public elementary school. This is a movement in the South Bay area. There are now over 23 such clubs in public schools in our area. Our club has 65 elementary students hearing Bible teaching and enjoying support for personal faith in Christ. Approximately, only 20% of these students and their families are associated/attend any type of worship (temple, synagogue, church, etc.) The opportunity is great. Other churches in the Bay Area who wish to get involved in such a club could contact us for information. There is great assistance and resources to get into area schools with the Gospel.

Christ Comm. Korean Celebrated 8th Anniversary

On September 30th through October 1st, Christ Community Korean Church (Concord) had a special celebration for our 8th Anniversary.

Rev. Paul Chung was one of our guest speakers (he retired at the 2006 district assembly from our Daly City Western Korean Church).  We also invited our District Superintendent, Dr. John Calhoun and his wife Jan, to celebrate with us.  She wore our traditional Korean suit that was a gift to her.

There were 57 members that celebrated together.  After the service, we had a “big dinner” with an array of wonderful Korean food.

We thank God for what he has done for us!

New - San Francisco Spanish Church

Our District Superintendent, Dr. John Calhoun and his wife Jan, attended a celebration at the San Francisco Spanish Church.

Rev. Rudy Zamora has been an associate pastor at the Salinas Iglesia del Nazareno “Oasis” since 2004.  He was ordained in 2006 with his lovely wife, Rosario, by his side.  They are wonderful representatives for Christ.  Pastor Rudy was installed as the new pastor for the San Francisco Spanish Church on January 7, 2007.  The official name of this new church is yet to be determined.

“Dime A Day”

Have you been saving and collecting dimes for Africa?  One dime will allow one African to live for one more day, by giving him food to eat.  One more day may give that African the opportunity to meet Jesus.  Save those dimes!  Send your check to the General Treasurer using the code:  ACS=1011 on the memo line.  John Wilcox would love to know how many dimes your church collected, send him an e-mail at pjwilcox@sbcglobal.net with your total.

We rejoice with all of you for the DIMES you have given this year to help the starving people in the Horn of Africa.  The following churches have reported their totals so far.  If you don't see your church on the list, please report your "number" to John Wilcox at pjwilcox@sbcglobal.net.

D.T.M. = Developing Tomorrow’s Missionaries

Do you have a child, teenager or young person in your church with a call to missions?  If so, make sure that Rick Cole has their name, so that the District and the General Church can keep in contact with this young person that may be one of our future missionaries.  The future spreading of the gospel will depend on our young people hearing God’s call, preparing for God’s call and then carrying out God’s call on their lives.

World Evangelism Fund

The church year is rapidly coming to a close, have you participated in helping make sure our missionaries get a paycheck each month.  It is important that everyone do something monetarily to help spread the word about Jesus.  The World Evangelism Fund is one way that you can help, for we have missionary families around the world that are depending on us.

Pray for our Men and Women in the Military

Please pray for “Abner Valenzuela” (Elder on the Norcal Dist.), and son of Revs. Andy and Ricareda Valenzuela (Pastors at the Vallejo New Life Filipino Church), as he will be deployed to Afghanistan for four months starting January, 2007 (Air Force).

Pray for Rev. John and Jeanne Ford’s son (Pastor at the Nazarene Family Church in McKinleyville), “John Ford”.  His folks say he is doing well!  He has finished basic training as a squad leader in the Army, and is now squad leader in his advanced training class.  He is currently at Fort Rucker, Alabama.  If you’d like to communicate with John, I have his address at the district office (925-680-0538) or contact his folks at:  nazfam@sbcglobal.net or (707-839-0188).

If you have someone special in the military that you’d like us to pray for, please send the information to kay@norcal.org.
