NYI

Hey everyone!  There are lots of great things happening with NYI on the NorCal District.

Here is an update:

Multi-Cultural Day was a great success!  It was good to see more of you and more churches represented at this year’s event.  PLNU brought representation where they talked about the college and the different multi-cultural groups that we have at the university.  For the past two years you have provided food from your favorite places around the world, the potluck this year was extra scrumptious.  Thanks for bringing so much food.  Also we have challenged both the students and adults to try food from different parts of the world, food that they may not think so appetizing.  Just ask them about ballut.  And last for you information we are going to change this event’s name, it will be announced at this year’s NYI Convention.

Speaking of NYI Convention, we will once again be meeting at San Jose’s The Point.  Mark your calendar for May 4 & 5.  We will kick off everything with a joint service with NMI on Friday Night at 7PM!  Please support our students and be there!  Our speaker this year will be Bo Cassell with Barefoot Ministries.  Bo was also coordinator of Youth in Mission.  If you want to hear a person who is a culmination of youth ministry and missions, this is the guy to listen to.  The next day we will once again put our words into action.  We will do The Feeding in a local park in San Jose.  Please remember to be in prayer concerning this event.

Elev8 is May 25-28, 2007 at PLNU!  You will be receiving a packet from Charles Broadhead for the different adventures that your students can sign up for.  However for team sports, talent, and quizzing you will need to do that through the district with Dave Myers at Petaluma.  His contact information is (707)763-0977.

Mark your calendar for this year’s Mid-High Camp at Rock n’ Water.  The dates set for camp is June 26-29, 2007.  This year’s camp director will once again be Kim Hersey, she can reached at (831)444.6064.  FYI- camp prices for students will be $235.00 and $60.00 for adults.  More information coming soon.

This year’s Houseboat Camp for High School students scheduled for July 30-August 3, 2007.  Our director this year is Eric Lapp at Concord Christ Community, can be reached at (925)685.4343.  More information is coming soon.

District All Nighter is going to be held once again at Santa Rosa.  The date is September 7th.  Joel Tippitt is already working on plans for this event.  Stay tuned.

And last but not least.  NYC 2007!!!  OH MY GOODNESS.  I can’t believe that this is right around the corner.  We are in the process of purchasing our plain tickets and all of the other final details for the trip.  Please keep in current with all of your payments for NYC.  The next payment is April 15th and all payments should be in on May 15th.  A very special thanks to all of you who have been on time with all of your payments.  And one more things about NYC… all NYC participants must attend our next NYC meeting after our NYI/NMI service at The Point on May 4th.  We will have a lock in only for those attending NYC.  Keep our ears and eyes open for more information.  If you have any questions do not hesitate to call Curtis Lillie (925) 449-5256or myself.

Thank you all so much for all you’ve done to support NYI.  Thanks for sending in your NYI budgets and for sending money to help support NYC.  I am so thankful for the opportunity to serve as your NYI President and for the privilege of working with all of you.

Serving together,

Pastor Donabel

NMI News

Tylenol for New Guinea

This year once again the District is collecting Tylenol for our Nazarene Hospital in Kudjup, New Guinea.  Our goal as a District is to collect sufficient Tylenol to supply the hospital with enough pain medication to last a year!  If each church will give $20.00, this will help cover the postage to send the Tylenol to this beautiful Pacific island.

Jesus Film Statistics, Taken from the Annual Report

For every $1 given there are 3 evangelical contacts, for $3 given, there is one decision made for Christ, for each $15 given, there is initial discipleship follow-up, for $1500 given, there is a new mission church.

God Blesses the Harvest - Here is a report from a country in the Horn of Africa:

There is a miracle taking place here.  All the villagers turn up for the JESUS Film shows, and ALL surrender their lives to Jesus.  It is harvest time?  The film was shown continuously since it was the first time for the JESUS film to be taken to this region.

People said they had walked all day to come and see JESUS and some people testified that they were led by lights and sounds which they had never seen or heard in this area since they were born.

The chief told us to choose the best area of land where we could build a church, so we chose the area next to the chief’s office.  We planted two churches with a total of 1,800 in attendance.

This JESUS Film team reported twenty consecutive nights of showing the JESUS film in seven different locations with attendance ranging from 8,000 to 30,000 each night!  Over the course of these showings, approximately 372,700 people were introduced to Jesus and some 344,000 made decisions for Christ!

In this region, we are seeing TODAY what the early church experienced in the book of Acts where the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved?” Acts 2:47b.

Easter Is Coming!

Easter is not until April 8th this year; do not forget the Easter Offering for World Missions.  Jesus the Hope, a tremendous opportunity to share the message with non-believers in 151 areas around the world.  Our Easter Offering for World Evangelism supports the work of missions in the Church of the Nazarene.  Make sure you take the opportunity to express your gratitude to the Lord not only in our praise and worship, but also in our monetary giving for missions.

Pray for our Men and Women in the Military

Bryan Hochhalter, is an Elder on the Northern California District.

Chaplin Bryan (Air Force) wrote:

“I have enjoyed the ministry among our men and women in uniform.  I count it an honor to serve with so many fine people.  Life has been busy.  I have traveled over 3,000 miles going around the country to some very remote locations.

I have enjoyed flying via Chinook helicopter to most of my assigned areas.  Sometimes we travel late at night or early morning to the forward Operating Bases.  It has bee a faith builder, but I am thankful for the peace God provides.

As of Feb. 27th Byran had made it home safe and sound!  What a praise!

News & Up-Dates from PLNU

Dear Friends,

Congratulations!  I just received the announcement, from the 2007 Best Christian Places to Work, that Point Loma Nazarene University has been selected as one of “The 40 Best Christian Places to Work” in this year’s review.

In each category of organizational size, three finalists are selected and PLNU is a finalist in the ‘large organization’ category for organizations having more than 500 employees.  Our selection is based on the confidential on-line survey that all benefits-eligible staff and faculty were invited to participate in last fall.  Our participation rate in the survey was 80.4%, thank you.  This was the first time Point Loma participated the survey and it provides us with useful comparative data.

Through our participation we have been recognized for some core strengths and through the survey results we will be able to identify opportunities for continued improvement.  This information supports our efforts to continually pursue excellence in all we do.  I’ll look forward to sharing the additional information from the survey data as we receive it.

Thank you for your work and the commitment to our Mission and the results that are shown through our students and colleagues!

Bob Brower, Ph.D., President PLNU

PLNU Groundbreaking Ceremony for “Smee Hall”, Our Church, Our Opportunity

On March 2, 2007 the PLNU Trustees witnessed the symbolic commencement of the new building that will house the School of Theology and Center for Pastoral Leadership.  Among those seen in this photo are our own Carol Van Buskirk and Dr. John Calhoun.

Gary and Debbie Smee, have committed a gift of 1 million dollars toward the total need of $3.2million.  The building is named in honor of Gary’s grandfather Roy Smee and his uncle Bud Smee.  (Dr. Roy Smee was D.S. of N. Calif. for many years in the ‘40s and ‘50s.)  Other donors have given $485,000.  The churches of the Southwest Region have taken on the challenge to raise 1.7 million dollars.  The campaign title is, Our Church, Our Opportunity.

Last year the churches on the Norcal District received information that explained how to present the project to their congregations.  The churches and individuals on our district have committed nearly $15,000 to date.  Our goal is $232,000 and there is a time frame of three years to raise the funds.  One way to generate funds would be to honor a former pastor, alumni, or a family member for $1,000 (over three years this equates to 96 cents/day.)  You may have friends or families that are connected to PLNU.  Let’s share this opportunity to help the future pastors, and educators.  For more information contact one of your trustees (Nancy Clayton, Daryl Hawkins or Carol Van Buskirk) or Eric Groves, egroves@pointloma.edu, or call 619-849-2520.  Send your checks or pledges to PLNU, Our Church, Our Opportunity, University Advancement, 3900 Lomaland Dr., San Diego, CA  92106.  Be sure to indicate which church is credited and what person you wish to honor.
