Our Church, Our Opportunity

Thanks to you who have already committed to sharing in raising the funds needed to build the Smee Building at PLNU.  We are planning on everyone doing something toward the School of Theology and Center for Pastoral Leadership.

Remember, you can honor someone special to you with a gift of $1,000 or more and it can be paid out over three years.

Dr. John H. Calhoun

District Superintendent

Rev. Dwayne Hildie – Passes to Heaven on June 18th

Rev. Dwayne Hildie was a wonderful father to Sharon Kilpatrick (San Jose Cambrian Park Church) and an elder in the Church of the Nazarene.  His son-in-law, Rev. Bob Kilpatrick, referred to him as “Rev”.  He was best remembered on our district for being the director of boys, girls, and teen camp at Beulah Park, back in the 1940’s and 50’s.  He pastored churches in Pueblo, Colorado, Santa Cruz, and Woodland, California, Edmonton Alberta, Canada, Fairbanks, Alaska, and Cheyenne, Wyoming.

When he retired from the pastorate he went into evangelism and held revivals all over Canada and the USA.  His memorial service was held in Cheyenne, Wyoming.  He was preceded to heaven by his wife, Ruth of 62 years, on December 6, 2007.  He will be greatly missed.

Geraldine Seago - Passes to Heaven on June 18th

Mrs. Geraline Seago was the wife of Rev. Orval L. Seago.  He pastored the Sunnyvale Church of the Nazarene on this district from 1976 – 1982.  Her memorial service was held in Bakersfield on Saturday, June 23rd.

Cupertino New Life Church Celebrates Their

“Ground Breaking”

Building D – Reasons to Rejoice!

On May 20th they held their groundbreaking ceremony with Daryl Hawkins, their architect, and David Flory, their contractor.  Members of the Campus Development Committee (CDC) did the digging:  Kim Kinoshita, Kevin Metcalf, Sharon Rauenzahn, Michael Lee, Joseph Lee, Carol Van Buskirk and Pastor Tim Isbell.

They prayed for God’s help in completing the projects in a way that leaves a clean witness for Christ with everyone they touch.  We intend to build stronger relationships with our city leaders, the neighborhood around our campus, parishioners across our three  congregations, our Little People preschool ministry as well as our after school tenant:  Far East.  So we are praising God these days for the wonderful spirit saturating this campus for development work.

MISSION MUSINGS from the President

What a privilege it was to meet with hundreds of you at The Point last month.  Our missionary, Linda Russell, commented on how informative and fun it was, and complimented so many of you.  Then, so many of you have commented to me and the other NMI Council members about how much you enjoyed Linda Russell.  She filled short segments of time with so much inspiration, and you had to listen “fast” to catch everything she said.  We hope to have her back on our District again soon.

Many of our pastors have responded to the District’s desire for an evaluation of the week, and I want you to know that I have read every one of them and have taken them to heart.  We will keep doing what we do well, and streamline over some things we do less well, and in all, be careful to give God the glory.  You’ll have to stay tuned to the online Bridge in future editions to see what changes we will make.  It is always fun to celebrate with the great gathering of “Senders” and it is to bring encouragement to everyone and congratulations to the “beyonders.”  (That’s my word for people, pastors and churches that go “beyond” the minimum.)

There is some sadness among those on our District who know and love John Cunningham, missionary to Africa and now working with the JESUS Film.  His father passed away on June 4, and we send our collective sympathy to him, his sister, and the family.  John has been our Convention speaker twice and also has had three deputation tours on our District.  If any would like to send a card to him, his address is: 15823 S. Avalon Street, Olathe, Kansas, 66062.

On a personal note, my “home church,” Cambrian Park in San Jose, celebrated their 50th Anniversary on May 19-20.  This is where Debi and I met, grew up and got married so we were anxious to attend and see old friends.  I only tell you this because (a) Bob and Sharon Kilpatrick indeed know how to throw a party and (b) it was as close to what Heaven will be like as I’ll ever witness here on earth.  There were people jamming into the sanctuary to praise the Lord together...many generations of church members meeting each other for the first time.  I saw people there that I thought had died, in their late 90’s, still singing and testifying strongly of their undying faith in Christ Jesus.  I saw old members of our Youth Group of the late 60’s and early 70’s looking as if time had stood still.  I got to hug old Sunday School teachers and former pastors who impacted my life and I got to tell them so.  I’m more resolved than ever before to keep the faith, spread the gospel and send the sent with every ounce of energy I have.

Straight Ahead,

John D. Wilcox

World Mission Broadcast

Ever wonder about how the Lord will reach everyone around the world before His second coming?  It is amazing to hear of the stories that are coming out of the smallest villages in the darkness of the jungle.  Yes, the Lord is using radio, the Internet and television to reach a lost world.  The Church of the Nazarene broadcasts 91 programs in 80 countries, 33 languages and dialects for a total of 1,355 broadcasts.  All of this for only $4.00 per minute, four dollars can change the world! Pray, and ask the Lord, what would you have me give for the World Mission Broadcast offering that our church is going to take in June.  Here are a couple of stories to show the value in giving for WMB:

Fahed listens to World Mission Broadcast's (WMB) Journey of Hope radio program in Saudi Arabia. Rarely does a day go by when we don't hear about fighting, death and despair in many areas of the Middle East.  However, Fahed shared the following testimony of hope and new life:

"I don't know how to start, but, I want to tell you that I am from the Saudi Arabic Kingdom and I always listen to your program.  Two months ago I accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and that was because of you.  I will remain grateful to you for my whole life.

I spend a long period of my life searching for peace and seeking the real God. That was a reason for me to worry about my eternal destiny.  I finally found the real peace in the Lord, Jesus Christ. I wish all my family members; friends and neighbors could hear the good news. I want them to share this Joy with me."

Thank you for your support of World Mission Broadcast.  Brothers like Fahed are part of the Kingdom because of God's grace and the truth he heard on a WMB radio program.

School Pal-Paks…. Now is the Time to Purchase!

School Pal-Paks provide students in Nazarene primary schools with the supplies they need to facilitate learning, such as pencils, scissors, etc. (complete list below).  Purchase the necessary items as they go on sale in July, put your paks together and send.

The Church of the Nazarene operates numerous primary schools around the world, providing quality education for children. Unfortunately, children overseas often do not have the supplies needed for school. In countries with economic challenges, families cannot afford to purchase supplies, or siblings are often required to share the supplies. In response to the need, Nazarene Missions International partnered with Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, Inc. (NCM, Inc.) to provide School Pal-Paks.

A School Pal-Pak will serve two students. Prepare School Pal-Paks in boxes of 10. Each box of 10 will serve 20 children.

The cost of each Pal-Pak is approximately $10.00. This is only $5.00 per child.

Packing Instructions:

1. Gather NEW items in quantities listed below. Assemble Paks and seal the zip-lock bags. Include only those items listed on the inventory.

Pack contents below into a 1-gallon zip-loc bag:

2 MEAD or composition notebooks

1 package of 10-12 #2 pencils

1 package of 10-12 black pens

2 pink erasers, 2-3” long

2 6” rulers (with metric)

1 package of 12-15 colored pencils

1 pair of blunt-nosed scissors

1 hand-held pencil sharpener

These contents will give each student a composition notebook, 5-6 pencils, 5-6 pens, an eraser, and a ruler. Two students will share the colored pencils, sharpener, and scissors.

2. Fill each 12”x12”x12” box (which can be purchased at an office supply store) with 10 Paks—no more, no less.

3. Do not insert literature (including anything with the church's name on it, notes, etc.) in the Paks or boxes.

4. Please put both “To” and “From” addresses on the box.

5. Send the boxes to the following (depending on method of shipping):

For Shipping via the Postal Service:

Nazarene Relief Shipments

P.O. Box 117

Fawn Grove, PA 17321-0117

For Shipping Other than Postal Service:

6. Send a check—made payable to General Treasurer’s Office, Church of the Nazarene—in the amount of $10.00 per box (for storage and shipping costs during the distribution process). Ten Percent Credit is given for the $10.00 per box that is sent for this project. Do not put the money in the Paks or boxes.

Mark the check, “School Pal-Paks ACM1788,” and mail to:

Pray for our Men and Women in the Military

I thought I would send you an update on our sons, Daniel & Forest Davidson.  Daniel is preparing for re-deployment to Iraq.  We will see him on Thursday June 7th for a Family Day at the base in San Luis Obispo.  Shortly after that, he will be off to Iraq.  We have been praying that his brother Forest would have a chance to see him somehow before he left  They have only seen each other a few times in the last six years, as they are both in the military.

Yesterday I was serving with our church at the local homeless feeding program and in walked my son Forest!!  His brother Michael had just picked him up at the airport and they were trying to surprise me!  I certainly was!!  He is on a two week leave from Afghanistan where he has been for the last five months.  Praise God, he is so good to us!!  Forest will be able to go to the Family Day with us to see his brother and it's going to be an awesome day!  I appreciate your prayers, it makes ALL the difference!

New Door Ventures

(Formerly Golden Gate Community, Inc.)

Friends and Colleagues,

The first part of June, GGCI celebrated the grand opening of Ashbury Images' new facility.  You can go to http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=local&id=5357795 and check out the Channel 7 News report with our story, see our new facility, t-shirts being made by the youth we work with, and highlights from Pedal Revolution, our nonprofit bike shop.

As a part of the evening's festivities, we also announced GGCI's new name:  “New Door Ventures”.  We have chosen to change our name to better reflect our work with young people.  Our new name is the product of months of discussion and reflection among staff, board, donors, community members and youth.

We will fully transition to the new name over the next few months, but effective immediately, our e-mail address will change to reflect our new web address: www.newdoor.org.  My new e-mail is mcole@newdoor.org.  Look for changes to our website and in printed materials later in the summer.  Thank you for your ongoing support.
