Our Church, Our Opportunity

Great reports are coming in regarding our youth ministries.  Everything I hear is that Nazarene Youth Congress was unusually anointed by the Holy Spirit and many of our students made lifetime commitments to follow Jesus.  Some report as having been called into vocational ministry.

Dr. John H. Calhoun

District Superintendent

We continue to hold up our youth in our prayers.

The Rev. Wilmer Guido Accepts New Assignment

Dr. Calhoun has appointed Rev. Wilmer Guido to a full-time position of Hispanic Ministries Coordinator with the approval of the District Advisory Board.  Rev. Guido has held this position on a part-time basis while also planting our Oasis Church in Salinas for many years now.

His responsibility is to assist in starting new Spanish speaking congregations wherever there is a possibility.

The first of these new starts is with San Jose Cambrian Park Church.  Pastor Guido and family have joined there and plan to make the new Spanish speaking congregation a vital part of the host congregation.

Rev. Guido will give more attention resourcing our existing Spanish speaking congregations and help other host churches that envision a Spanish speaking ministry.   As of now there are three other host churches that hope to add this ministry in the near future.  Maybe other churches want to do so also.

We depend on your prayer work for this endeavor.

San Jose Cambrian Park Church - Our Jubilee Year

50 Years of God's Faithfulness

1957 – 2007

San Jose Cambrian Park celebrated their 50th anniversary of the church during May. Saturday afternoon started with our young people having their third annual Nazcar shopping cart races with tricycle and scooter races for the children between heats.  This is one of our teens big fund raisers for the year and was enjoyed by church friends and neighbors alike.

Saturday evening we had a banquet with 230 in attendance enjoying great food and fellowship. Following dinner we adjourned to the sanctuary for a photographic trip down memory lane, followed by many sharing “remember when” as well as special music by those that in past years shared their musical gifts with the church during worship!  Rev. John Wilcox, was our emcee for the evening and wrote a special tribute in song for our charter members entitled “You Were a Charter Member If” to the melody of Victory in Jesus! Sunday morning everyone continued to celebrate with 176 in attendance. We had great music including a choir with current and former members, then, Dr. Jerry Johnson, General Superintendent emeritus brought the morning message.  We concluded our weekend with an evening service, featuring our youth band “Jacob’s Well”, and one of our former youth pastor’s Rev. Ray Wisner speaking.

We were blessed to have celebrated with us, former members, family and friends that came from eight states as well as many cities all across California.  Former pastors that came back were Dr. and Mrs. Jerry Johnson, Rev. Ray and Lil Wisner, Rev. John and Angie Whitsett, and Rev. Earl and Juanita Kilpatrick and Rev. Ken Dodge, that had served as Interim pastors.

NYI

NYC- Perspective from Santa Rosa Nazarene Church

Our kid’s lives will never be the same is echoing in my heart this last week as we reflect on all God did on our trip and is still doing.  One of our students asked God on the trip, “Why am I the only Christian in my family?” and found himself on his face in prayer for his whole family.  We are already seeing answers to those prayers as his sister is coming to youth group this next week and the parents seem to have an openness to the church.  We had three students coming from very broken families finding freedom in new ways and turning away from the world and embracing Christ.  One of our girls has new freedom in her worship and has come home feeling continual freedom (which is a HUGE step for her).  Three of our eight students were called into some form of full time ministry (Missions, youth ministry and urban ministries)!  God’s Spirit moved in powerful ways in our group and we are still seeing the affects!

Our students came home and shared at youth group this last week about how they “fully surrendered their lives to Jesus Christ” and challenged the youth not present at NYC that they could too.  “It does not take a trip to St. Louis to fully surrender your life to Jesus Christ, you can do that anywhere you are!”  That night, seven students gave their lives, for the rest of their lives to Jesus.  Students coming out of some very dark places made decisions that night to trust in Jesus and some are starting to be discipled in small groups.  I believe there is a revival in our teens and this is just the beginning!  All of us on the trip are saying, “We just want more of God!”

SSM News

B.C. Forbes, the man who founded Forbes magazine, said, "You spell success: T-E-A-M-W-O-R-K." Cooperation is a key principle to good organization. I read recently that geese can fly 72 percent farther when they're in formation than when they fly by themselves.

When we cooperate together, when there is teamwork, there is great growth. Cooperation is a greater motivator than competition, and it lasts because you feel like you're together on a winning team.

Good organizations provide a supportive climate of trust and teamwork. In the Bible, when referring to Christians in the church, the phrase "one another" is used 58 times. It's as if God's saying, "Get the message! Help each other!" There is no such thing as Lone Ranger Christians. We are together in this. We're a team. There is tremendous power in cooperation.

God can overlook almost anything in a church, but God will not overlook disunity. In the first 10 chapters of Acts, 10 times it says, "they were of one accord … of one heart … unified." When you have unification like they did in Acts, you’ll have the power of Acts.

Snow is a beautiful demonstration of what God can do with a bunch of flakes. Snowflakes are pretty frail, but if enough of them stick together they can stop traffic. Alone, I couldn’t have made much of an impact on the Saddleback Valley, but together, the Saddleback Church family has touched tens of thousands.

Is TEAMWORK happening in the Discipleship Ministries of your local church?  If not, then what are you doing to promote the TEAM SPIRIT?

If YOU notice a ministry struggling, then perhaps God is calling you TO PITCH IN AND HELP!

Open invitation:  If you have a TRANSFORMATION STORY from your local church, would you be kind enough to share it with The Bridge? Let's celebrate how God is changing hearts!  Let's celebrate the new lives that are coming into His kingdom!  E-mail me at pastor@salinasnewlife.org, and I'll pass it along to The Bridge editor.

JESUS Film Harvest Partners Update

Praise the Lord for how He continues to work through the ministry of JESUS Film Harvest Partners. Since January 1998 to July 17, 2007, more than 7.8 million people have indicated decisions for Christ, and there have been over 2.4 million initial discipleship follow-ups. There have also been 12,417 new mission churches started, and 20,588 new pastors are in training.

PRAY FOR:

The following three families have left the United States this summer headed to the mission field as new missionaries:

o        Randy and Mary Jane James —Africa Region (Kenya )

o        David and Rosie Kerr and family—Caribbean Region

o        Eric and Linda Zane and family—Asia Pacific Region (Philippines)

Pray for each of these families as they continue to transition to life on the field, that they will sense the Lord’s presence and provision.

LINKS stands for "Loving, Interested Nazarenes, Knowing and Sharing."

The LINKS program of the Church of the Nazarene is a network of personal connections between missionaries and Nazarenes around the world. Missionaries are assigned to districts and, then on the district level, connected to local churches. This gives each church an opportunity to become personally acquainted with the missionary family and their field of service. Typically, churches send packages, cash gifts, cards, and other remembrances to their LINKS missionaries.

In return, the churches feel a sense of involvement with the world mission enterprise of the church through regular correspondence from the missionaries, updates from their field, and even through deputation services while the missionaries are on furlough. The missionaries are encouraged, knowing people care and pray for them.

Do You Know the ABC’s of LINKS?

A—Always pray for your LINKS missionaries.

B—Become acquainted with your LINKS missionary family through correspondence.

C—Concentrate on your LINKS cash assignment and requests by your missionaries.

Send Christmas, birthday, and anniversary cards (always send them early to allow for overseas delivery time).
