Keep The Main Thing the Main Thing

"To Make Christlike Disciples in the Nations" is the mission statement of our church.  How accurately does this statement describe your life? your church?

Unpack this a little more:

"To Make..."  this implies it is our primary occupation, is it?

"Christlike.. " can one be more comprehensive and specific at the same time?  I don't think so.

"Disciples..." Jesus said "learn from me,"  so let's learn to live and love like Him.

"in the Nations." think global and act local is not a new idea but still most relevant.

Antioch Family Church celebrated their 50^th Anniversary on October 6^th and 7^th. On Saturday evening, there was a “Walk Down Memory Lane” with a slide presentation of old photos of people and events from previous years. We also enjoyed special music presentations, and much sharing and reminiscing about God’s goodness over the years. Many old friends were re-united and lots of fun and laughter ensued. A delicious dessert social topped off the evening.

On Sunday, Antioch Family Church was blessed again to have many guests and visitors, including Dr. John and Jan Calhoun, our District Superintendent, former Pastors Jeff and Sharon Baughman, and Pastor Jim and Darlene Norcross. Dr. Calhoun shared an inspiring message.

A special lifetime achievement award was presented to founding church member, Jerry Clark. Following the service a lovely catered luncheon was served “on the grounds” with large umbrella tables. The weather was beautiful and the day was huge success!

God’s grace and faithfulness were evident continuously throughout the weekend event! Antioch Family Church praises God for enabling them to continue shining and growing here in Antioch, as “a beacon on the hill.”

El Shaddai Spanish Church - Sunday, October 14^th we celebrated the Installation of Daly City El Shaddai’s new pastor(front row) Rev. Elmer Guido, his wife, Karla, daughter, Vanessa, and Rev. Myeong Mo Kim, pastor of the Daly City Western Korean Church. (Back row) Rev. Carolina Guido, Rev. Wilmer Guido, and Dr. John Calhoun, our District Superintendent. It was a beautiful ceremony enjoyed by all.

Whatever the secret is to longevity, the residents at Landmark Villa, in Hayward are living it!

Frances and Gordon Dawes, who were celebrating their “72^nd Wedding Anniversary”. They had their first date in September 1933 and are now 91 and 90 years old, respectively.

Of the 35-or-so residents who joined the party, five in addition to the Dawes were in their 90s.

Frances Dawes said, she believes that she and her husband's marriage has stayed strong since they each "give more than 90 percent."

Both Dawes also credit their Christian faith. Initially trained to be a tool engineer, Gordon Dawes entered the ministry in 1940 and pastored churches of the Nazarene in small-town Indiana, where the Dawes met, and in California, where they moved in 1959, for 40 years. Frances said her time was filled with entertaining and hosting missionaries.

The couple is now members of the Church of the Nazarene in Castro Valley.

"I married the right lady!" Gordon said.

They have one son, seven grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. They moved into assisted living in 2004, after Gordon was injured in a fall.

After all these years, they still recall fondly a moment of truth the night before their wedding when Gordon had a confession to make. Although he had told Frances he was the same age as she, he was actually a year younger.

She was undecided for a few hours until he told her that God had made the perfect boy for her in Canada, where he had recently moved from to Indiana.

“Congrats” to this inspirational couple!

Grandparents Jim and Betty Cooper are thrilled over the arrival of their new grandson, Gabriel, a future “soccer player!” His parents Kristan and Gabe are living in the Bakersfield area. Needless to say…Grandparents Jim and Betty will make many trips to see their “little soccer star!”

We have the LIVE NATIVITY outdoors with a real life size stable and manger and live actors dressed in beautiful costumes (sewn by Rick Cole who is so talented in this area!) and real animals, sheep, and a cute little donkey. We play Christmas music over our sound system and then every half hour or so, we read the Nativity Story for everyone to hear. Outside we also have a Petting Zoo for the children which they just love!  So many children in the city never get to see real live farm animals so they have a blast with this! We also have ponies for the children to ride.  Inside we have a second life size stable and manger, etc. and we provide costumes so that children and families can dress up and take pictures.  Some like to make it into their Christmas post card, etc. It has been very popular.  Inside the sanctuary we also set up tables and decorate and provide hot chocolate, coffee, and cookies for our guests.  We are adding a new dim- ension this year. 

We have decided to try adding a Craft Bazaar and have just this week placed an ad for crafters who would like to sell their hand-crafted items and donate 20% back to the church.  This money will go to our Links Missionaries.  We have already had a great response to this. The Craft Bazaar area will be in our Fellowship Hall, separate from the Live Nativity area.

In this second volume of a magisterial series, Olson retraces the path by which Wesley developed his doctrine of Christian perfection. Beginning with an exhaustive survey of Wesley’s early theological system, a foundation is laid that later explains why Wesley did radical surgery on his theological system upon his return to England in early 1738. This leads into a full presentation of Wesley’s perfection beliefs at Aldersgate. Olson explores the theological roots to Wesley’s struggles over assurance and how they contributed to the formulation of his gospel of two works of grace. In this way the story of how Wesley’s doctrine of full salvation as a second work of divine grace took shape is told with refreshing, and at time, startling insight.

Of special interest is Olson’s thesis that John Wesley went through a second spiritual crisis in the mid-1760’s, propelling his perfection theology in new directions. Special attention is given to Wesley’s doctrine of sin, showing both its chronological development and its mature articulation as voluntary and involuntary. Wesley’s letters are plumbed for insights into how he counseled seekers toward the experience of perfect love. With the use of charts and other aids, all the major themes and contours which shaped Wesley’s perfection theology are addressed.

This volume represents one of the most exhaustive studies available today on the evolution of Wesley’s perfection theology. On Sunday, November 4^th the Monterey Living Hope Church celebrated their 60^th Anniversary! Rev. Mark Bernhardt has been the senior pastor with his wife Glenda, supporting his ministry for 16 years at the Living Hope Church. They have a great staff with Pastor Joshua Johnson their Youth Pastor, and Pastor Monty Jackson, their fabulous Music Minister! Dr. John Calhoun, D. S., and his wife, Jan joined in the festivities. It was a great day of celebration for all that attended to “praise the Lord” for His many blessings!

District Training Day – Spanish Churches at The Point

Nearly 80 of our pastors and lay leaders from most of our Spanish language churches came together for a Day of Equipping on Saturday, October 13^th at The Point. Rev. Marcos Cisneros, Pastor of Rancho Cucamonga Church was the dynamic and humorous Guest Teacher. “Thank you” to Rev. Oscar Morales and his crew from The Point for their excellent work in coordinating the event and motivating our leaders to receive the training. God is blessing and raising up a new generation of leaders among our Spanish language churches!

Greetings from your Norcal NYI Council,

We hope all is well with all of you and your youth ministry. Here is some important information that we would like to share with you:

· Please start thinking already about our NYI Convention in May. This year we will be electing Global Convention Delegates. We want to make sure that the entire district is represented in this year’s very important election. Make every effort to be there.

· After high school: we are planning a retreat for those of you between the ages of 18ish-29ish. If you are interested in helping plan this event, or have any suggestions, please let us know.

· Do you remember when we had DAD (District Activity Days)? This year we are planning to restart something similar so that we can represent our District in this year’s Elev8. If you have any questions or are interested in helping with this event, please give us a call.

· Camp Videos are out! If you would like to buy a camp video from this summer please let Eric Lapp from Concord Christ Community know. His number is 925.685.4343. Please let your students know that they are now available.

· Fundraisers!!! We would like to keep event costs down; in order to do this will need to do district fundraisers throughout the year. If you know of a good one, if you would like to head one up, or if you would like to help with ones that we are looking to do, please join our crew, we need all the help that we can get!

Since the summer I have heard wonderful things happening in different youth groups on our District. I have heard stories of students being challenged to raise money for 24 Hour Famine, because of how he was challenged during NYC in St. Louis. I was told of a student that over came their shyness and is now bringing friends from school to church. I spoke with a young girl who told me that this whole time she thought she was living it all right. But in reality she thought she was doing life right because she didn’t know she was living in sin. I am so excited because, God is changing lives! It’s a privilege that we can be a part of something greater than our Local Church and our District even our denomination; we are a part of the Kingdom of God.

The differences between engaged and actively disengaged members on these

u Engaged members are *more than three times as likely* to agree that they are completely satisfied with their lives.

u Engaged members are nearly one and a half times as likely to spend two or more hours per week serving and helping others in their church and in their community.

I think you will agree, growing the number of engaged members in your churches is of the utmost importance.
