News Updates on Churches & Pastors

TRIP TO CALI, COLOMBIA

This is an experience that Rev. Wilmer Guido would like to share with the Northern California District Pastors.  This was the first International Convention held at the Iglesia Del Nazareno Casa de Oracion in Cali, Columbia.

They are growing rapidly using these four steps:

1.      Win

2.      Consolidate

3.      Discipleship

4.      Send

This strategy is called “The Master’s Plan” because their focus is “to make Christ-like disciples”.  It was amazing to have thousands of people from one denomination gathered into one stadium.  On the last day around two thousand people surrendered their life to Jesus.  It was truly an inspirational experience!

Our American missionaries serving in South America translated for our delegation from the USA.  They did a wonderful job in their translations.  Dr. Jerry Porter, General Superintendent, preached the main service in both languages.

I encourage all of you that already have Hispanic congregations in your churches or are thinking of starting one, to consider attending the event next year.

Revs. Arturo and Monica Sanchez from:  Napa Living Vine Church of the Nazarene

We also went to Cali, Colombia.  It was one of the best experiences we’ve had!  It was amazing to see so many pastors and their spouses from different countries, such as:  the USA, Japan, Puerto, Rico, the Philippines, Peru and other countries coming together.

The first day was like a regular service, but the second day everything started to change.  Everybody was smiling and communicating with each other.  It was difficult to understand each other, but the Holy Spirit broke the language barrier.  We all worshipped the Lord in Spanish.  We really don’t have words to describe the experience!

The best part of all was that the pastors wanted to see the church grow and we were strengthened by that same feeling.  The pastors that speak Japanese, English, Portuguese and other languages are praying specifically for us, La Iglesia del Nazarene de Napa.

Isn’t it wonderful?  We thank our Father for this opportunity.

San Bruno Oasis Church

Rev. Annette Brown was serving as interim pastor for the past six months.  After consulting with the church board, her status changes from “Interim Pastor” to “Pastor” in compliance with Manual paragraph 116, effective November, 2007.

BASS Convention

Convention 2008

Dear BASS Friend,

Check out the excellent line-up of workshops for the March 6, 7 and 8, 2008 BASS Church Workers Convention.

E-mail:  bassnews@bassconvention.org

We are quickly getting ready for this great weekend!  We have worked very hard the past year to make sure that the convention is going to be just what you need in your area of ministry. It has been our prayer all throughout the planning season that you'll be encouraged and enriched in your ministry.  We hope you'll be able to pick up lots of great ideas and resources, and that you'll be able to network with people who share your ministry passion and vision.  And who knows, you might even make new friends at BASS this year!

Our leadership team chose the theme "Wake Up Your Ministry" in order to assist you in making sure we never let the comfort of the status quo dictate how we do ministry.  As we abide in Christ for every part of our ministry, we want to Him to keep us alert as we plan, pray and minister.  We will be looking to Jesus in March to bring revival to the Bay Area and to our churches.

On Thursday night we'll start things off with some awesome worship, lead by musician and writer Don Moen.  Be sure to come early to get a seat and to ensure that you don't miss any of this wonderful time of worship.

The speaker for Thursday night is none other than Anne Graham Lotz, speaker and founder of AnGeL ministries. The daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Billy Graham, Anne launched Just Give Me Jesus in the year 2000.  Anne is an award-winning and best-selling author.  Her nine books include her signature book Just Give Me Jesus and her most recent release I Saw The LORD.

On Friday night, March 7th, our General Session Speaker is Alan Nelson. Alan is a 20-year pastor and church planting veteran, the author of a dozen books, and now executive editor of the popular REV! Magazine - the only pastoral magazine designed primarily to help pastors equip ministry leaders.

On Saturday morning, we are privileged to hear from Pastor Rene Schlaepfer. Rene is the teacher pastor at a leading Bay Area church, Twin Lakes Church in Aptos. We are thankful that he has freed up his busy teaching schedule to address BASS this year.

Check out the list of workshops, check out the lineup of exhibitors and put together your own itinerary for your visit in March. Of course, don't forget to register!

Consider also in joining the discussion by using the BASS Forum to give your 2 cents, or comment on the blog posts. Also, feel free to use our feedback form to let us know what you love about BASS, what you'd like to change as well as what and who you'd like to see more of at the next convention.

Sincerely,
Christiaan VandenHeuvel
BASS General Chairman

Some of your District NMI Council will be attending the Regional NMI Conference in Phoenix, Arizona in early March (7-9).

World Mission Mobilization.

We will soon be entering two key weeks of the prayer-year, one in March and one in May.  For those who enjoy a time of quiet separation each day to be alone with the Lord in conversation, try this prayer guide as developed by our Board of General Superintendents:

            a.  Begin with thanksgiving, praise and worship

            b.  Respond honestly

            c.  Intercede for personal needs

            d.  Ask God to reveal His will, strategies and plans for and through    you.

            e.  Trust God to pour out His Holy Spirit into the Church.

            f.  Intercede for ministry needs.

            g.  Seek God's glory.

            h.  As an intercessor, repent over the involvement of people in sin.

            i.  Intercede for reconciliation.

            j.  Ask and trust God to intervene in global challenges.

            k.  Intercede for next generations and emerging leaders globally.

            l.  Conclude your time with God in thanksgiving, praise and worship.

DIMES

If you have taken a DIME offering during the last couple of months, please email your totals to Pastor John Wilcox :   pjwilcox@sbcglobal.net.   If you have not sent your dime offering into headquarters as yet, include this code on the memo line:   ACS:1011.  Your church will get 10 % credit, this is an approved special.  Remember that it takes only 10 cents a day to feed one person in Africa, which equates to giving that person one more day to meet Jesus!  It is amazing to see how many dimes one can collect over the year.  If you have never taken this challenge start now!   Send you dime offering in the end of next December, and see what a difference one dime can make in the lives of others.

Crisis Care Kits

Every church is challenged to send one banana box which is six crisis care kits each year.  We never know when Northern California will be the folks that need this gentle but necessary touch.  If you have not been participating in this project, put it in the plan to do it this year.  It costs about $20 for each kit and less than $25 for shipping.  Ship your box to the Nampa, ID address and the cost is greatly reduced.  For complete instructions go to:  http://www.ncm.org/pdf/crisiscarekit.pdf.

February is Coming and Time for Alabaster

Alabaster is an important part of our missions giving.  The coins and dollars collected help provide buildings globally for people to assist in learning, healing, living and growing in Christ.  Your giving will make certain the Jesus continues to be proclaimed around the world in years to come.

Volunteer for Missions

The Independent Sector.org’s “ Give 5” campaign, encourages people to volunteer 5 hours per week and donate 5 percent of their income to charitable causes, where are you spending your volunteer hours?  If you have not had the opportunity to volunteer for missions, there are many ways through the Church of the Nazarene to do it.  Here are some of the following to think about:  Work and Witness, Youth In Mission, Youth-serve, Mission Corps, Nazarene Medical Organization, plus the opportunities in your local church and on our district.  Check out the following web site at  http://wmmobilization.org/ or see your Pastor for opportunities to spend time being Jesus to others.

Tylenol for New Guinea

In May during the mission’s convention, we will again be collecting Tylenol for our hospital in Papua New Guinea.  Tylenol or acetaminophen is what is specifically needed for the medical professionals to dispense to their patients.

World Evangelism Fund

The end of the church year will soon be here, we need to take the time to ensure that every church is on target for paying the World Evangelism Fund by 100 percent.  Not only is this important for the survival of our missionaries, but it is what the Lord expects of us.  If every church would tithe 10 percent of their income, the Lord would bless!  Try it, challenge the Lord and see what great things He will do for you.

Choir Robes

If your church has choir robes that are clean and in great shape, there is a need for them at our Asia Pacific Seminary.  For more details contact Pastor John Wilcox at: pjwilcox@sbcglobal.net.

Point Loma Nazarene News

Todd Clayton was elected Homecoming Prince (pictured with his date, Rachel Cox) by the 532 freshman at Point Loma Nazarene University in November of 2007.  Todd was born in Monterey, CA and was not just the son of Nancy & Jim, but was the youngest person of the body of faith at the Salinas Church of the Nazarene for a short time. Throughout his life he has been nurtured through the hands of nursery workers, Sunday school teachers, Bible quiz coaches, Caravan leaders, youth pastors and dedicated people of God being God’s hands of care and commitment to him. Todd’s character and faith have been developed through the nurture and support of his current church family at CrossRoads Community Nazarene in Palo Alto.

In the summer of 2006, while participating with the NorCal Work and Witness team to Guatemala, Todd totally committed himself to God’s plan for his life.  One of the six teens that went on the Guatemala trip is now Todd’s PLNU roommate, Mike Osteen.  God used 18 year old Mike as an expression of Himself to listen and lead Todd into the “joy of the Lord” they both now enjoy.  There are no age requirements in “God business”—just obedience.

Todd is majoring in Christian Ministries and his favorite class this fall semester was Greek. He works in the Spiritual Development Office and leads worship each Wednesday night for the 100 middle school kids at San Diego First Church.  Please continue to pray, give and invest in our youth for God’s purposes tomorrow.
