WHO SAYS THERE IS NO FREE LUNCH?

Hayward First Church

Over the last year I have been sharing the vision of serving our community. Finding ways to let the people around our church know that we are here for them and that God is still alive and wants to minister to them through our church. I have been studying in many books and online seminars ways we can reach our community. I have been praying that someone in our church would come forward and catch the vision and run with some activity that would reach people around our church… About two months ago the prayer was answered.  Dale a long time member of our church called me, and said he wanted to meet with me. He said that his vision was to give out free lunches in front of the church. My first and only response was YES!  He had shared this vision with some of his friends and they painted the church so it would give us a new look in the community. They painted a hallway, and a room where the sandwiches are made. For three weeks he has left the Sunday morning service early to give our free lunches out in front of our church. I wanted to show him support and wanted to give others an opportunity to bless people in our community, so, last Sunday Palm Sunday I ended the service at 11:45 and invited the whole congregation to follow Dale out to the front of the church to give away free lunches.

A side note, is, our young adult Sunday school class prepared the lunches during Sunday school while the teacher was still giving them their lesson.  What a great way to learn about God, having a Sunday school class that serves!  As the congregation lined up in front of the church we were able to give away 61 free lunches in just under ½ hour.  The by product of blessing others is that we too were blessed, all who were out there helping had smiles on their faces that you could see for a mile away. It is truly a blessing to bless others… this give credibility to our new church motto, “Loving God, Serving People.

The Lord is working through our free food give away…Let me tell you what has happen this week.

Grocery Outlet called me on Thursday and offered me free food.  They gave us 22 cases of mixed vegetables in two pound frozen bags. Along with the vegetables they gave us, we received two cases of ham stakes, each ham stake is enough to feed a family of four. They also gave us four cases of TV dinners.

Last Sunday that is what we gave away, each bag had a ham stake or two TV dinners in it, with a bag of mixed vegetables. They even gave us the bags to put the food in for the give-away.  This was all free to the church!

Now for the miracle:  while we were giving out the bags of food, (note we had about 50 bags) a lady from the apartment building across the street came running over to tell us that her daughter needed Jesus, and ask if we could pray for her. A few of the group at that end of the line broke out in prayer on the spot. A great moment of God was taking place right out side of the walls of our church, Praise the Lord!

Now for miracle number two:  a man who had received a lunch last week and had gotten a bag of food this week started to follow us into the church when we were done with the give away for the day. He asked if we were going to have service now, as he wanted to attend.  In talking to him, I told him about our service times and how God was blessing our ministry (he told me he would attend next Sunday). He made a commitment that really hit me, He said, “I am glad to see your church doing something like this (the food give away) as most churches around here do not care about the people.”

It dawned on me, have we been behind our walls so much that the world sees us as a church that does not care, is that how most of the community sees all the churches in our community.

My prayer is that we keep on giving away free lunches and free food when we get it so our community can see that we are a people who do care about God’s people, our neighbors, and our community.

Connect the Dots

Connect the dots will be the theme for this years Missionary Convention.  Join us in Santa Rosa on May 1st starting at 8:00 am for all Local NMI Presidents, and then 8:30 am for all Pastors, Delegates and those that love missions.  Two of our own will be our mission speakers as John and Vicki Moore (former Pastor and wife at Concord) will be sharing with us what the Lord is doing in Budapest, Hungry.

Bring Your Tylenol

Do not forget to bring the Tylenol from your church family to convention, as we will connect the dots of Tylenol, between you and the hospital in Papua New Guinea.  Remember that Tylenol or Acetaminophen is the only kind of pain reliever they can use.  In order for us to pay the postage to send the Tylenol, every church is asked to give our NMI District Treasurer, Donna Rickard $20.00.

A Jesus Film Report

Jesus Loves Us from Guatemala

I am so happy to have the JESUS Film Team here in my community. This is the first time they have visited us.  We did not have the slightest idea of all that Jesus suffered for each and every one of us, but after watching the JESUS Film we realized how much He loves us. That is why I accepted him into my heart.

Did You Know?

The Church of the Nazarene has entered Kabul, Afghanistan as a certified Compassionate Ministry Center.

Thus far, Nazarenes have given 2.6 million dollars, for the Books for Pastors.

In the Europe/Asia Region of the world, there is one Nazarene church for every three million people.  The need for missionaries is great!

In Southeast Asia, the church is planting a church a day… within 2 years the church will be organizing a church a day.  Right now, in this same region in ministerial training are 100 God-called men and women that will be ready to be ordained next year and 200 God-called men and women that will be ready to be ordained in two years.  Pray for these students that the Lord will protect each one as they study and serve Him.

WARNING!  YOU MAY BE ON THE CALL LIST!

Over the next few weeks your friendly (!) Norcal Discipleship Council (SDMI) will be calling all pastors and SS Superintendents to ask two questions regarding disciple making in your local church.

1. What’s working for you? (i.e. Where, how, when and with whom are you being effective in making disciples?)

2. What’s tough right now? (i.e. Where, how, when and with whom are you struggling to be effective?)

If you would like to help respond to these questions, talk soon with your pastor or SS Superintendent!

Out of your responses, we will compile a report that we can share at District Assembly 2008. From this report, we hope to learn from each other and provide encouragement for future ministry.

April 27      District Camps Love Offering Sunday (to promote Dist. camps)

Multi-Cultural Event - April 11

In the past years we have had a great turn out for our Multi-Cultural Day.  On this day we highlight the different cultures that are represented on our district.  Some of these are Chinese, Korean, Filipino, Samoan, and the different Spanish cultures just to name a few.  This year we will worship and take communion together, eat together, and hope to feature different cultural activities that are particular to a people group.

PLNU will also be there to talk about the importance of higher education and to just hang out.  They will be available to answer any questions that you or your students might have.

I am so excited for this event.  If you and or your church want to be involved in any way please do not hesitate to give me a call.

Sports Day - April 12

This year following the Multi-Cultural Event we will be having a day set aside for sports competition.  The events we will focus in on are basketball, flag football, soccer, and volleyball.  We are still in the process of tightening up how each event will take place.

One of the goals of this event is to try to put together teams that will represent us at Point Loma for Elev8, our Regional Competition Weekend that will is traditionally on Memorial Day Weekend.  For our specific competition we are allowing students in 7th grade to compete, however, when we start to form teams that will represent us in May, only students who are in 8th grade and up can compete, this is a regional rule.

We are still waiting for more information for Elev8 from the region, but that should be coming in the mail very soon.  As for Sports Day on April 12th we are in the process of putting all of the information together and will be getting that out to you in the next couple of weeks.  If you have any questions, please give me a call and I will do what I can to answer them or get the question to the right person.
