Church Health ImplementationDr. John H. Calhoun, D. S.

Servant Leaders,

Most of you have used the Church Health Survey by now.  Some have asked for help in taking practical steps toward implementing change for the "Minimum Factors" on your results.

Lonnie Bullock of New Church Specialties has responded to the need for follow up and now is ready to help us.

You are asked to attend the first in a series of training events called Church Health Implementation.  There will be two of the "eight quality characteristics" covered on each day of the series.

The date of the first event is Saturday, August 16, 2008 at Concord Christ Community Church and the time is 10AM-4PM with lunch provided.  The only cost will be $5/person for lunch.

Future events will be announced later.

All pastors and lay leaders are asked to attend.

Here are the steps needed from you in preparation:

  1. Take immediate steps to conduct a new Church Health Survey if your last one is more than 12 months ago.  Contact Lonnie Bullock for a new packet at Lonbullock@aol.com.  Cost is now $225 and there is some financial assistance if needed.
  2. Return your survey to Lonnie Bullock by June 30.
  3. RSVP with Kay at the District Office.

  4. Bring your lay leaders in order gain traction in implementing change in your church.

The two quality characteristics to be addressed on August 16 will depend upon the prevailing need shown in the results of the surveys that you will be taking.

Be Healthy, Make Disciples, Train Disciple Makers

Blessings,

 John Calhoun

TO

CHAPLAIN, MAJOR ABNER P. V. VALENZUELA FOR

distinguished himself in the performance of outstanding service to the United States as Senior Protestant Chaplain, 314th Airlift Wing, Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas. During this period, Chaplain Valenzuela's outstanding leadership led to the success of the chapel program and made significant contributions to the wing. Under his visionary leadership, a new contemporary worship service was launched with over 865 Airmen attending in the first 6 months. Chaplain Valenzuela opened a new Crossroads Cafe, executing a 30,000 dollar program while providing an alternate place for Airmen to gather. Furthermore, he trained 40 volunteers and championed 12,500 dollars from the Air Force Chaplain Service for cafe upgrades. Deployed in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, Chaplain Valenzuela mobilized 251 volunteers in 11 humanitarian missions and distributed 6.4 tons of aid to 5,000 civilians in Afghanistan. Finally, as the acting wing chaplain for 257 days, his leadership was validated as the base chapel was named the Air Education and Training Command's Outstanding Medium Chapel for 2005 and 2007. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Chaplain Valenzuela reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

World Mission Broadcast

Ever wonder how the Lord will reach everyone around the world before He comes again?  It is amazing to hear of the stories that are coming out of the smallest villages in the darkness of the jungle.  Yes, the Lord is using Radio, the Internet, and Television to reach a lost world.  The Church of the Nazarene broadcasts 94 programs in 73 countries, 30 languages and dialects for a total of 7,012 broadcasts. However, we still have 122 countries yet to reach with the good news of Christ with the World Mission Broadcast.   The challenge set a goal for your church for each church member to give $4.00 each.  It would only take giving up one Starbucks, a magazine or Big Mac to buy one minute of airtime.  Here is a story to inspire you and to help you to pray, Lord, what would you have me to give for the World Mission Broadcast offering that our church is going to take in June.

A teenage listener to Rated PG a Nazarene radio program in the Philippines called the show to win a small gift one that opened a door to ministry in her village.  To deliver the gift, Pastor Colorado, the program’s host, and his wife trekked on foot several hours to the remote village, Sitio Camias, where families listened to the program on radios powered by truck batteries because they had no electricity.  The isolated community joyfully welcomed the unusual visitors because there was no Christian church or pastor among them.

The Colorado’s returned to Cabanatuan City and told their congregation about the community’s needs.  The church wanted to help.  At Christmas, the pastor and several church members returned bearing gifts—bags of tots and food, and a love offering.  They enjoyed a simple meal with community members and hosted a Christmas program.  The Cabanatuan church pledged monthly visits to lead Bible studies.  In April 2008, they sent a medial team and will conduct Vacation Bible School and evangelistic services.  A Nazarene radio program opened the door to God’s love in Sitio Camias.  A loving Nazarene church walked through it.

Did You Know…Mission News

Myanmar cyclone relief: God makes a way where there seems to be no way!  Nazarene Compassionate Ministries was able to enter Myanmar when it seems like the government was not letting anyone into the country to give aid.  We have 11 churches in this country.  Some of the churches were damaged by the cyclone.  However, the Myanmar District Center escaped damage.  Your church of the Nazarene is able through the district superintendent and local Nazarene Pastors to give aid to the many people that do not have food or shelter.

How Can Your Help?

Crisis Care Kits are needed to replenish the supply that is rapidly being used due to the tornados, earthquakes, cyclone, as well as the first hurricane of the season that just hit Nicaragua on Thursday, May 29th.  Every church is encouraged to fill one banana box, which contains six crisis care kits.  For complete instructions go to the following website:
http://www.ncm.org/pdf/crisiscarekit.pdf

Send your Crisis Care Kits in Banana Boxes to:

       Nazarene Relief Shipments

       Attention:  Liz Murtland

       Hands of Hope

       1201 South Powerline Road

       Nampa, ID. 83686

Make sure to follow up with a check to the General Treasurer for $12.00 per banana box to help get the crisis care kits to the destination of the disaster.

LINKS Missionaries

At District Assembly, every church was given a new LINKS missionary!  Have you contacted yours yet?  Whom do you have?  Are your missionaries retired on furlough or spreading the gospel in the field?  Do not let another month go by without letting them know you care, with a card or a letter.

What's New?

New Formats. We need to hear from you! Below I have outlined two new formats under consideration to help us connect with you and meet your needs. Please review both of these and give your feedback.

Chat Rooms.  We have a new technology that will allow us to set up chat rooms. Would you be interested in participating in a live chat room for discipleship and ministry education purposes? The private chat room would be by invitation only because the current technology will only allow us to have 12 simultaneous users. We can expand the technology to accommodate more simultaneous users if there is enough interest. There would be a set time when we would meet in the chat room to discuss a specific topic and the chat would last 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Conference Calls.  Would you be interested in a conference call structure? Here is how it would work. You would have a toll number to call and you would listen to the host of the call briefly talk about a specific subject. The line would then be opened for you to ask questions and connect with others on the call.

If you would have an interest in participating in one or both of these formats, please e-mail me at clt@nazarene.org or call toll free at US +1 8882432767 Call . Be sure to let me know what time of day you could participate and what topics you would like to see discussed. You can also take the poll on the home page (www.discipleshipplace.com) which will help us gauge the level of interest.

Leadership Tools. We have added many new Practical Tips articles.

Meet A CLT Participant. This month we are featuring Dr. Larry Wagner, who has been doing an outstanding job of leading CLT classes in his church. Because of his leadership in this area, he has had an opportunity to help another church on his district do CLT classes.   If you or someone you know has a story to share send a brief bio and picture to clt@nazarene.org!

New Poll. Take our new poll which is located on the lower left of the home page at www.discipleshipplace.com.

What's Coming?

Discovering the Old & New Testament. We will be replacing Encountering the Old Testament and Encountering the New Testament

With Discovering the Old Testament and Discovering the New Testament. We have received several requests for us to make this change and this is in process.

Meeting Your Needs. In the last poll 46% of you said that you struggle most with prayer life and 18% said accountability was an area of struggle.  We are making plans to come alongside you in your walk with Christ and provide some accountability and prayer tools.  More will be coming in the next month.

REGIONAL QUIZ MEET AT PLNU

On April 5th Norcal had its District Children's Bible Quiz meet for the Book of Genesis.  It was a great time with Bible quizzing Competition, Memory Verse testing, music, food, cotton candy, a jumphouse, and ending with awards and announcement of who qualified to go to the Regional Bible Quiz Meet at PLNU. It was a great time for all!

The top red level quizzer was Alving Solomon (Concord Christ Comm.), for the second quiz meet in a row! “Congratulations” Alvin!

As far as the blue level quizzers- we were able to send 2 teams this year!  The top church team on the District was Cupertino New Life!  “Congrats” Cupertino!  They are Jed Lee, Winston Lan, Nicholas Allard, Jaynee Lee, Dominique Medina (Concord Christ Comm.), Michaela Murphy and Dorcas Hoi. We are excited to let you know-at the Regional Quiz Meet out of 9 Church teams, they came in 3rd place!!!!

Way to go!

Our District All Star team consisted of- (back row) Noelle Pounds, Cody Spinadel, Eileen Sipsy (Pittsburg) and (front row) Christian Medina, Micah Fitzgerald, Jordan Medina (Concord) and Sarah Pounds (Pittsburg). We are excited to announce that they placed 6th out of 15 teams!!! Way to go!!!!

Not only did they do exceptionally well as teams, there are a few individuals we would like to mention for their own personal achievement!
Out of 2 rounds, Nicholas Allard, Micah Fitzgerald, Dorcas Hoi, Jordan Medina, and Michaela Murphy each got a “perfect round”! Well done!  And just when we thought it could not get any better, our very own Jed Lee from Cupertino had a perfect game- 2 perfect rounds!!!!!! GREAT JOB!!!!!

We are so proud of each and every one of our Norcal Children Bible quizzers; red level and blue level, whether they qualified to go to PLNU or not!  Each one spent time and made the effort to learn a little more about God and His plan for their life.  Most quizzers learned between 16 and 20 passages of scripture, and everyone learned so much!  Each one heard stories about Abraham, Isaac, Joseph, (and more!!!!) and learned how God working in the lives of the people in Genesis could apply to their life today! And what is really exciting is that every one of them had fun doing it- and these things will last a life time! Eternally even!

If you are already a part of Children's Bible Quizzing, keep up the good work!  If you are not yet participating, prayerfully consider it, and think about how this could change the life of your church, by changing the hearts of the children and leaders involved!  The children are our future, and what better way to prepare for the future of our church, than preparing our children's hearts, minds and futures with the Word

of God!

In the fall, we will begin the study of Exodus!  Until then, enjoy your summer! We will get out information as it gets closer, but until then, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
