Union Between San Bruno Oasis and Samoan Church

We had a totally glorious Union Service on June 22nd.  It was just what was needed.  Thank you so much for telling me the importance of such a service. It had the effect of folks feeling so much more confident about the future of us all together. Men as well as women were crying and praising God about US.

I used the mosaic of our stained glass windows as an example of our unique, wonderful and God-given blend.

I came up with covenant litany and lots of symbolism. We had candles for each person to light from each other.  The candles were of all shapes, sizes, colors, conditions.  After repeating the litany to each other in a circle, we brought the candles into the middle and placed them in a mish-mash around small flags of each of our countries of origin, and a huge red three wicked central God, candle.

The Lord gave ideas for a message that highlighted our commonalities which was wonderful to think about and a blessing to all.  In addition, I highlighted the uniqueness that each congregation brought to the union. It was enlightening to see these views and reasons for further praise to God.

Of course, we ate and fellowshipped for hours afterwards with guests, Pastor John and Eileen Yiu.

Again, thank you, John, for showing me the value of intentional symbolism for joining of two congregations - even though they kind of felt they already were a “whole".  This was such a great time!

Global Ministry Center

From:  Dr. Jerry Porter, General Superintendent

Dear Friends:

We are living in a historic time for Church of the Nazarene pastors and laity, members and friends, as we approach the church's Centennial and the transition from Headquarters to Global Ministry Center (GMC). This fall, the administrative hub for our beloved church will move from three aging office buildings in Kansas City, Missouri, to a 109,000 square-foot, two-story building in Lenexa, Kansas.

Many of us have been involved in the process of creating new buildings, or refitting older buildings, for best usage. Now, as Nazarenes, we join in creating a new facility that will serve to help support ministries around the world. Built for long-term and flexible use, the GMC will have advanced technological and communications services.

As with any building construction, many will benefit now and in the future from this vital center, and we need the financial support of many to make this reality a matter of wise stewardship. A voluntary GMC offering is underway from now until September 30. Not only will this help offset construction costs, but it will also serve as a means of letting our parishioners learn more about the great connection we share as Nazarenes.

Perhaps your district will choose to support this at upcoming events, or encourage local churches to participate in this special giving opportunity. Several districts and churches have already pledged financial support for the GMC.

Visit the GMC web site at nazareneglobalministrycenter.org to download a PowerPoint, short video, and slicks for your publications. Please mention this great opportunity in your upcoming communication pieces and on your district's web site. Details on how and where to give are also included on the web. All donations will go towards Ten Percent approved mission specials.

Thank you—your ongoing efforts to live out your faith personally and corporately are so encouraging. Let us consider how we may be a part of this opportunity. Each member of the Board of General Superintendents believes in this project to the extent that we all have participated in a generous way in giving to this need. It is our hope that you would be willing to forward this information to all of your pastors so that they may determine how their churches could also participate in the project.

KIDS REACHING KIDS

Two ways we can have our children actively involved in missions:

v     VBS Mission Offering Sunday

Operation Proclamation:  Every Heart heading every Word.  One Sunday during the summer, take an offering with your children to help purchase more Proclaimers.  The past two years Nazarene kids have raised over half a million dollars to help other kids.  A high percentage of the people in many areas of our world are pre-literate.  This powerful tool the Proclaimer, helps them hear the gospel of Jesus Christ.  The Proclaimer is a self-contained audio Bible, with a microchip version of the Bible in the language of the listener.  It has four different options for power (electric, battery, solar panel, and crank), so it can be used anywhere!

This is a 10% approved special offering for our local churches.  In the memo line, mark your check “VBS Mission Offering”. Send your check to the General Treasurer, by September 30, 2008.  For more information, go to:  www.kidsreachingkids.com.

v     School Supplies on Sale Create some School Pal-Paks

A great opportunity for our children to give to others by purchasing school supplies for children in our Nazarene primary schools.  In the next couple of weeks school supplies will go on sale, so take your children and go with a list to fill a pack for under $10.00.

The Church of the Nazarene operates numerous primary schools around the world, providing quality education for children. Unfortunately, children overseas often do not have the supplies needed for school.  In response to the need, Nazarene Missions International partnered with Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, Inc. (NCM, Inc.) to provide School Pal-Paks.  For details on what constitutes a school pal-pak, go to following website.
