Kid's Camp

Sat., Sept. 20-21 Sun.

After having to reschedule camp from ay 2008 due to the fires in Santa Cruz,we had a great time at Redwood Glen in Scotts Valley!

There were 97 of us at the overnight camp in the beautiful Santa Cruz Mountains.  Jim Cooper and Linda Cole were our speakers this year.  God was with us!  Many kids came forward to accept Christ and many were sanctified!  We praise God for his work in the lives of these kids and the adults that took the time to come help us.

If you have never been to this camp, we have many activities including swimming, crafts, hunting for banana slugs, pinewood derby, creek walking, hiking, campfire times (without the campfire this year).  Our pinewood derby winners this year were:  Jamara Dillard, Olivia Hodges, and Megan Takamatsu for their age groups. The first place overall winner was Jamara Dillard.

Congratulations!

Something to Pray for…A Trip to Africa

Your District NMI President, Pastor John Wilcox is leaving October 8th for Ethiopia and Eretria.  John will get to experience a holiness revival growing daily in these countries.  There are at least two churches starting each week, with 10,000 people every day coming to know Jesus as their Savior.

John will also have the privilege of visiting several different villages and will spend four nights in a hut with a village family.  John is traveling with a group of District NMI Presidents around the United States.  Pray for this group of Nazarene leaders as they experience a Work and Witness trip like few of us have ever experienced.

For those of you that participate in December Dimes, part of the reason this tremendous holiness movement has started is due to your dimes. When someone is hungry it is hard to focus on anything else.  One dime will feed one person for one day, one more day to possibly meet Jesus.  The Church of the Nazarene has given thousands of dimes to buy cornmeal and beans for those that are hungry in Ethiopia and Eretria.  In 2005-2006 church year our district had 43 churches that participated in sending 1,417,000 dimes. If you are interested in Dime Stories, visit the following web site:  http://dimes.norcal.org.  Keep saving those DIMES!

Christmas Is Coming!

If your LINKS missionary is overseas for Christmas, your church needs to be getting a package in the mail soon.  Do not forget to send your LINKS cash Christmas to the General Church this month.  Make sure the name of your missionary is on the memo line.

PK Retreat - October 17-19, 2008 at Point Loma Nazarene University

Our PK’s (pastor’s kids) are kids in the church who face challenges that often time have no place to express themselves.  The PK Retreat is a place where they can do this.  We are asking that the church cover the cost for your pastor’s kids to go to this retreat.  The cost is $45 per student; this will include their lodging and food for the entire weekend.  Transportation is being coordinated by each district, please call your district NYI President and she (Donabel Martin) can help direct you.  The $45 cost does not include the transportation.

Please send your registrations and payments to:  Southwest Region, 500 E. North Ave., Lompoc, CA  93496.  Checks can be made out to Southwest Region USA; they should be received by Friday, October 10th.  Since that will be past the due date when you receive this, contact Donabel Martin at 707-712-9408, or e-mail:  donabelcmartin@sbcglobal.net to find out if your PK’s can attend after that registration date.

General Convention

NYI Global Convention is going to take place in several world areas.  The world area that we are going to send our delegates to is Mumbai, India. Aside from the four people who were voted on during our district assembly, we would like to build a team of about 10-12 people.  This group along with our delegates will participate, but cannot vote during the convention.  We will also be going to Calcutta, India or Bangladesh for a 10-15 day ministry trip.  In total, expect to be overseas 15-20 days, this will include travel time.

The dates of General Convention are June 24-26 with the ministry trip to follow.

Each local church will be receiving an application which is due Friday Oct. 24, 2008.  You may also receive a copy by contacting Donabel Martin.  The cost of the trip is going to be around $3,000.00.  You must be at least 18 years of age to participate on this trip and an active person in your local NYI/Youth Ministry.

Please be in prayer as you decide to participate or not to participate.

Sunday School Ministries

We offer our deepest thanks to our outgoing SDMI Chairman, The Rev. Tim King, Pastor or the Salinas New Life Church of the Nazarene.  He has diligently worked for improvements in Sunday School Ministries for the past eight years and has given of his time and efforts with enjoyment and support towards others.

Dr. Steven Redmond, of the Castro Valley Church of the Nazarene has been appointed to assume this responsibility.  We welcome him and look forward to working together toward effective Sunday School and Discipleship Ministries.

A Sunday school teacher was telling her class the story of the Good Samaritan, in which a man was beaten, robbed and left for dead.

She described the situation in vivid detail so her students would catch the drama. Then she asked the class, "If you saw a person lying on the roadside all wounded and bleeding, what would you do?"

A thoughtful little girl broke the hushed silence, "I think I'd throw up!"

Salinas Parsonage Receives NEW ROOF!

Here are pictures of the wonderful volunteers that worked to put a new roof on the parsonage for the Salinas Oasis Spanish Church.  Below, Dan Dague, from the Livermore Discovery Church, told his story about the roofing.

What a great experience this was!  Words cannot express the joy that floods my heart.  Pastor Leo and his wife, Elvia (Cruz) were exceptional hosts and introduced us to Nicaraguan food.

We arrived around 2:30 p.m. Thursday, and they had all but one section above the garage stripped.  We were able to prep and lay some sheets of plywood. Friday we finished laying the plywood.  In the afternoon, BFI had not picked up the dumpster so we could finish stripping the roof.  I asked my wife to send an e-mail out to our congregation to pray.  God is good!!  BFI came a hour and a half later.  Saturday we were able to cover about 60% of the roof with shingles.  John, a carpenter in their church, is going to finish this week. We had a wonderful time of prayer Saturday night before leaving for home.

Thank you for the opportunity!

God's servant,

Dan

The Annual Offering Goal - $250,000

www.nbc.edu

Last year 1,403 individuals took one or more classes from NBC.  This was an 8% increase over the previous year and marked the third year in a row that NBC broke all previous enrollment records for total number of students.

Through our technology department, NBC provides classes, programming, or technical support for many colleges and universities around the world.  Nazarene colleges and universities served in this way include:  Caribbean Nazarene College, European Nazarene College, Institute Theologique Nazareen/NTI, Nazarene Theological College in South Africa, Olivet Nazarene University, and Trevecca Nazarene.

Your gift this year can help NBC continue to expand the number of ministries in which it operates while continuing to maintain the primary mission:  “To prepare adults to evangelize, disciple, and minister to the world.”
