Let us return to an earlier emphasis.  Who is discipling you?  Who are you disicpling?  Let us not grow weary in well-doing.  Let us be steadfast "to make Christlike disciples in the nations."

The District has only received 69% of our assigned budgets of the first 10 months.

At this rate, we will have a shortfall of over $110,000 at the year end.  This is close to double our deficit from last year.

Updates on Churches & Pastors

Rev. Gordon William Dawes (1917 – 2008) went to be with out Lord on December 18th.  He will be missed by many.  He was a long time Elder on this district and served the Lord with enthusiasm and gusto for the last 60+ years.

He was married to the “love of his life, Frances”, for 73 years!  What a beautiful life they shared together.

Dr. Steve Redmond, Pastor of the Castro Valley Church of the Nazarene, officiated over the celebration of Gordon’s life.  He shared many interesting stories of Gordon and his life.  It truly was a celebration for a wonderful man that served our Lord every day.

If you would like to communicate with Frances, you can contact the Castro Valley Church (510) 581-8377, and they will be able to give you her address and phone number.

Rev. Richard J. Nikkel, a retired elder in the Church of the Nazarene, slipped away to be with Jesus on Sunday morning, December 28th at the age of 88.

Rev. Nikkel pastored the Clear Lake Church from July 1973 to April, 1976, and of course, attended there for many years during his retirement.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 10, 1:00 pm, at the Redding First Church of the Nazarene, 2225 Bechelli Lane, Redding, CA 96002.  Dr. Stephen Campbell will officiate.

We are not going to have an open microphone at the service, but if you have an anecdote, funny story, or just want to say something about Richard's ministry or character, please send your comments to Carol Nikkel by Wednesday, January 7, and they will be read during the service.  Email:  carolnik@comcast.net.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent in his name to Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, Un-sponsored Children's Project.  The Un-sponsored Children Project provides the opportunity for children to begin the program while they wait for a sponsor.

General Treasurer, Church of the Nazarene, 17001 Prairie Star Parkway,

Lenexa, KS 66220

Thank you,

Carol Nikkel

Spanish Pastors Teacher Seminar

Last January 4th at Sunnyvale Church of the Nazarene, ten ordained pastors were trained to be teachers for the new extensions of the Nazarene Center of Ministerial Studies. This training was taught by Dr. Roberto Hodgson, who serves as the denominational Hispanic Mission Director for the United States and Canada. This training certified those ordained pastors to teach the Modules that the office of Clergy Development is providing to train new pastors in United State and Canada.

Actually the Nazarene Center of Ministerial Studies in San Jose has thirty students enrolled; they are preparing their lives to open new churches on our District.

Also in February 2009, a new extension will open in Livermore.  There already have twenty new students waiting for this program.  Praise the Lord!

January 2, 2009

Hello friends,

This is the end of the 2008 and we are looking at the beginning of a new year.  During 2008 Lori and I responded to a call from God to start a new church.  As many of you know, we were sent to an assessment through the Church of the Nazarene at Nazarene Bible Collage in Colorado Springs to learn some of the things that we would need to start a new church.  I have also taken two classes through the college that will help us launch a healthy and motivated new church. Taking these extra classes has been in addition to the classes I am taking for ordainment, with the emphasis on evangelism.

The new church, now called LAKE CHURCH, has had a sending service from Clearlake Church of the Nazarene in October of 2008.  Below is an excerpt from the Norcal District Bridge Newsletter.

Pastor David and Lori Kincaid

New Start - Lake Church of the Nazarene - On October 5, 2008 the Clearlake Church of the Nazarene announced the start of a new work in the greater Clearlake area.  This new work will be named Lake Church, of the Nazarene. David and Lori Kincaid have gone through an assessment in Colorado Spring this last summer and are excited to begin the new church.  David is taking classes at Nazarene Bible College to assist him in beginning this new work.  He and Lori will also be going to New Church University in January 2009 to further their knowledge on starting a new church.

The first meeting of Lake Church will be Saturday October 11, 2008 at Redbud Park in Clearlake.  “There is a lot of desire in the group of professional people in this area to have a church that is designed around their needs” says David.  “We have eleven families that have come to us with an interest to go to a church like that, and we haven’t started public worship yet”.

This church will target the people in the South Lake County area that do not have a church home.  As this church is still in the first stages of coming together, the place where they will meet is still to be determined, but one of the families has offered their place of business to start.  “We will meet in an upscale hair salon owned by a gracious lady.  This woman has been on my prayer list for a very long time, she is not involved with a church, and has never been a member of one”, David continues, “this is the people that God has called Lori and I to minister to, good people with little time that have never had a church home”.  As this is written the worship times will be Saturday evenings for group service and another time throughout the week for in-depth study.

As any new work, they ask that you keep them in prayer.   Thank you for joining us in this exciting and new work. The Bible is full of verses that give us a glimpse of how mighty God is and to the lengths that God goes to reach us, His children. Again and again God tells us that He has begun a new work.  One of my favorites is found in Isaiah 43:18 & 19.  Here is God reminding people that He had delivered them from slavery in Egypt, and telling them, and us, what we can expect in the future.

“But forget all that—it is nothing compared to what I am going to do.  For I am about to do a brand-new thing.  See, I have already begun!  Do you not see it?  I will make a pathway through the wilderness for my people to come home.  I will create rivers for them in the desert!”

Thank you for helping us to become a pathway in the wilderness.

David and Lori Kincaid

Santa Rosa Church on Work & Witness Trip to Belize

"The day after Christmas, 40 people from three Nazarene churches, Santa Rosa, Bakersfield Olive Knolls, and Glendora linked arms to Minister Christ's grace, truth and love to some of the people of Belize.  For five days, some group members ministered at an orphanage by holding and listening to and playing with the children there as others cleaned and repaired showers, toilets, lights, swings, and teeter-totters.  They also installed two new dryers while others joined in the kitchen in preparing meals for 42 needy children.

The rest of the group spent five days building a foundation and walls for Pastor Keith Joseph's parsonage in a little village called Cottontree.  Come rain or sunshine (and the rain did come) these folks slugged through mud and water to erect a home that would at least provide Pastor Joseph and his wife Judy running water, which they didn't have.

"Beyond the physical labor, group members had opportunities to pray with a 3-year old girl to receive Jesus, lead a young man named Marvin back to Christ, share truths about God's Kingdom with our Mayan cave tour guide (Marcos), who revealed by some of his comments that God had "set eternity in his heart".

"And to think:  This was all envisioned and planned by a father and daughter (lay people), Mike Downard and Becky Downard, who developed a burden for Belize while on a cruise.  It was a privilege to be a part of three churches serving together, and to watch God at work in our lives and in the lives of the people of Belize."

ALABASTER:  THE HISTORY AND STATISTICS

Following World War II, the critical need for buildings and land in the world mission areas of the Church of the Nazarene was presented to the General NMI Council. The Council asked Rev. Elizabeth Roby Vennum, a member of the group, to submit a plan that would generate giving for this need.

Rev. Vennum knew if God wanted those buildings, He would provide the plan.  On the return trip from Kansas City, God gave her His plan of giving "love" gifts.  It was modeled after the sacrifice of the woman who anointed Jesus' head with expensive perfume poured from an alabaster jar (Matthew 26:6-13).

The General NMI Council unanimously adopted the plan, and the first offering was received in 1949.  Now, more than 50 years later, more than 7,300 projects have been purchased or built with more than $79 million.

In 2007, Nazarenes gave US $3,123,834 for Alabaster to fund 236 construction projects on mission fields, averaging 4.5 projects per week (churches, parsonages, colleges).

Continue to save those dollars, quarters, nickels, and pennies for what you give does matter as you give that love offering to the Lord for Him to multiply.

 D.T.M. = Developing Tomorrow’s Missionaries

Do you have a child, teenager or young person in your church with a call to missions?  If so, make sure that Rick Cole has their name, so that the District and the General Church can keep in contact with this young person that may be one of our future missionaries.  The future spreading of the gospel will depend on our young people hearing God’s call, preparing for God’s call and then carrying out God’s call on their lives.
