Updates on Churches & Pastors

Marin Hamilton Community from Pastor Patti Branscome

"This has been an exciting month!  One person in one of our Bible Studies committed her life to Christ.  One person in our congregation has received her Local License for the first time, and two others are ready to join the church."

Highlighting Ruby Fong / San Jose - The Point

Ruby Fong taught the “middler” class in our Children's Department for at least 25 years.  She is still remembered by kids (now adults) and parents alike as someone who loved unconditionally and always had fun creative crafts, or ways to present the lesson.

Even today, when she is no longer able to teach in the Children's Department, she is still very active in her senior adult SS class:  she picks up people, visits the sick, does special care ministries for many, visits those who cannot come, etc.  Ruby is truly a SS teacher/worker in the best of the tradition.

Pastor Brad and Sonya Edgbert – Petaluma Hillside Church

They were surprised by their son Kyle for a visit from Iraq!  He arrived for a two week stay with them.  He was here to celebrate his father’s special birthday with him!  He will return to his unit in Iraq where he is stationed in the U.S. Army, infantry.  “Thank you Kyle” for all that you and your friends do for us to keep our freedoms.  May God continue to bless our men and women in the Armed Forces!

Pittsburg First Church

The church hosted a crab feed on Saturday, Feb. 7th.  Here are a couple of pictures from the evening.  The first one is of Dr. John Calhoun (D.S.) and his wife, Jan, enjoying the buttery garlic marinade and all the messy fingers that go along with eating the yummy crab!  The second picture is a couple that attends the Antioch Family Church, Carlos and Mary Bonner.

“Thanks” to Larry Fitch, and Pastor Marvin Pounds for getting the crabs and to those that helped make it a successful fund raiser!  It takes a lot of folks to make these dinners work, and all of those volunteers are appreciated!

To:      Norcal Pastors, Sunday School and Discipleship Ministries Leaders and

            Local Church Office Staff,

From:  Dr. Steve Redmond, SDMI Chair

RE:     Upcoming Events and Announcements, Norcal District SDMI

Date:   February 25, 2009

Friends,

Norcal Sunday School and Discipleship Ministries is attempting to infuse some energy into the SDMI programs of the district and the local church.  In this effort, there are some key announcements that need to be made.  I know that you have received some email announcements.  But I want to continually put this in front of you so that you will adopt it as your own.  Let me take a moment to encourage you not only to read this letter, but also put into motion some proactive plans to make each of the following a huge success on our district.

District SDMI Website

We are currently developing a resource site for every local church.  In this site will be announcements, discipleship resources, children’s ministry resources, General Church resources, Summer Camp information and a Sunday School Reporting portal.  Please check here often for the latest resources.  Visit the district site and then follow the Sunday School links or go directly to the site at:

http://sites.google.com/a/norcal.org/sundayschool/Home

At some point in the near future you will be able to obtain some of the following from this site:

Children’s Ministry Resources

·        Information of Children’s Ministry Events

·        Quick Click Lessons

·        Coloring Pages

·        Story’s

·        Puzzles and Games

·        Songs

·        Links to the best resources on the Web.

Youth Ministry Resources

Discipleship Ministry Resources

·        Modular Discipleship System for use in any discipleship vehicle.

·        Links to Discipleship Resources.

General Assembly Information and Resources

Link to the latest news and events.

Sunday School Reporting

You may have read that the reporting procedure of Sunday School has changed.  We want to thank Moon Louie for his years of service in this area.  Starting today, you will be reporting your Sunday School and Worship attendance on the district web site.  Visit www.norcal.org and then click on the Sunday School link to the left.  There will be announcements on the main page, but simply scroll down to the last box on the page and select the link CLICK HERE TO ENTER SUNDAY SCHOOL AND WORSHP ATTENDANCE.

Enter in the information required, AND please take the time to share with us some exciting things that are happening in your ministry, AND nominate a teacher or worker for special recognition at the SDMI Convention on May 8th.  Every church is strongly encouraged to report.  My office will be calling you to collect the information if you do not use this site for reporting.

SDMI Celebration

The Norcal District SDMI Council is sponsoring the Celebration on the Lawn with the Blackwood Gospel Quartet (Formerly Blackwood Brothers) in Concert.  This quartet is famous for their southern gospel style with songs like Have a Little Talk with Jesus, Jesus is Coming Soon, and many of your favorite gospel quartet classics.

There will be giving special awards to Sunday School teachers and workers you nominate, door prizes, special drama presentations, and a Barbecue Dinner.  This event will take place just following the dismissal of the afternoon session on May 8th.

We’ve already been announcing this in our local church and will be renting vans to rendezvous in Santa Rosa with the rest of the Norcal family for this event.  This is not just for delegates.

Summer Camp

There is no argument that the Summer Camping program transforms lives.  If I were to ask you, “Would you be willing to pay $250 for a child to get saved?” you wouldn’t hesitate to write the check.  Summer camp is that investment.  Last summer 14 children and teens from our church went to camp; some of them new to our church.  Every one of them made a first time commitment or recommitment to Jesus.  Our Summer Camping program is, without a doubt, a crucial part of our children and youth evangelism goals and should be a very high priority for every church.  We should be finding children in our neighborhoods that would like to go and do everything we can to raise the money to see that they attend.  No child should stay home if they cannot afford it.  It’s just too important.

I would like to ask every church to adopt a goal to send children and teenagers to camp.  Ask your board to adopt a vision and put steps in place to get them there.

Here are the Summer Camping opportunities for 2009.  Calendar them today and begin promoting them tomorrow.   Car Washes, Bake Sales, Yard Sales, Worker Auctions or Student Adoptions all can help you reach your goal.

Elevate

Date:  May 22-25

Location:  Point Loma Nazarene University

Cost of Registration:  $100.00

Information for Elevate is always received through the region.  I hope that they will be sending that information to all of us soon.  What I know so far are only the dates and location.  If you have a complete sports team from your local church that would like to compete please let me know and we can talk about the team registration.  If you have students from your church that would like to join a team let me know also so that w can connect them to the right teams.  If you would like to coach a team let me know too so that we can let the district know that we are trying to put such a team together.  Please contact me ASAP if you have any interest in any of these things.

Sr. High Camp - THERE IS NO HOUSEBOAT CAMP THIS YEAR!!!

Sr. High Camp/Mission Trip

Date:  July 15-27

Location:  Los Cabos (Southern Baja), Mexico

Cost $400-$450 (I am currently partnering with different groups to help subsidize this cost.  In the information site it says that the price is $550, but I am hoping that we will be able to cut down the cost to $400-$450 per participant.  I know that this seems a bit higher that what summer camp has looked like but do remember that we the trip is longer and further.  If you know of groups that are able to help subsidize this cost please let me know and may be we can work with them, it would be tax deductible.)

Contact People:  Curtis Lillie, Josh Johnson, Donabel Martin

We are partnering with PLNU’s Youth Works department.  There is more information on http://www.pointloma.edu/youthworks, please check out the site and apply today.  If you have any questions do not hesitate to call me, Josh or Curtis.  Also Melissa Tucker is the contact person from Point Loma and she would love to hear from you and answer any questions you might have.  One more thing… there have been questions floating around about safety in Mexico.  I want to assure you that it is safe… where we are going is safe.  Much of the uncertainty is happening in Tijana.  We will drive right through TJ and work at the south end of Baja.  NorCal and PLNU would be the first to pull out if we conditions are not safe for our students.

In the works:  Sr. High Weekend

We are working to see if it is feasible to do a Sr. High Weekend.  The purpose of this weekend would be to work with our students that were not able to make the Mexico ministry/mission trip.  We know that there are several reasons that people might not be able to make the trip down to Mexico and we want to make sure that all our students have that special way of connecting with each other, with leaders and most of all with God this summer.  More information will be coming soon.

I hope that this answers some of your questions and please do not hesitate to call or e-mail us with any question.  Thank you so much with your partnership in ministry.

Dist. NYI President

Nazarene Missions International

Tylenol for New Guinea

This year once again our District is collecting Tylenol/Acetaminophen for our Nazarene Hospital in Kudjup, New Guinea.  Our goal as a District is to collect sufficient Tylenol to supply the hospital with enough pain medication to last a year!  Visualize in your mind a headache or backache and nothing to help relieve the pain, and then picture our Nazarene friends in New Guinea.  Purchase that bottle of Tylenol and bring or send it to assembly.  If each church will give $20.00, this will help cover the postage to send the Tylenol to these beautiful Pacific Islanders.

Million Hours of Prayer… Have you Started

A million hours of prayer is not a new idea for General Assembly, it has been done in the past, and has made a difference.  All Nazarenes have been asked to pray forty two seconds a day for a total of two hours before June.  Are you wondering about how you can specifically pray?  Here are three suggestions for one pray about.

  • Pray that the travel plans will go smoothly for the 5, 000 delegates that will be involved with the General Assembly as well as the Conventions for Sunday School, and Missions.
  • There will be delegates that will travel from around the world, travel visas are mandatory and sometimes challenging to get.  Pray for the paperwork and those that give the permission for our delegates to be able to come, and pray that it will be done in God’s timing.
  • Pray for the General Superintendents and the General Secretary as they prepare for the services and the changes that will be voted upon by the delegates.

News Received Last Week from Headquarters

There were 24 new missionaries appointed with global missionary contracts.  The General Board of the Church of the Nazarene approved our denomination to enter four new countries:  Guinea, Africa; Niger, Africa; Moldavia, Eurasia Region; and Norway, Eurasia Region.  Pray for our missionaries in these countries that Jesus will be seen through them and people will come to know God’s redeeming love.

The Board of General Superintendents has also requested that all of us pray and fast for:

  • Compassion for every nation
  • Resources to carry out our global mission
  • Our local churches.

Dear District Superintendent:

I think you know my heart when I say that I believe our forthcoming General Assembly will be on of the most significant events in our denomination’s 100-year history.  Clearly, our global village is in the very throes of enormous, far-reaching change.  Now, more than ever, we need God’s anointing to be the change agents for our times.

For the first time in our church’s history, the majority of the General Assembly’s body will likely be made up of representatives from outside the United States and Canada.  The presence of these global voices is absolutely necessary when discussing the important issues brought before the General Assembly and Conventions.

However, for our world area delegates to take part in such an event requires great sacrifice, making it unfeasible for many to even come.  The General Assembly International Delegate Expense Aid (IDEA) Fund was created to provide financial assistance for our world area delegates who will incur great expenses to be a part of the global celebration.

We invite you and your district to participate in a special offering for the IDEA.  Donations will be accepted through June 1, 2009, and can be mailed directly to the Church of the Nazarene Global Ministry Center (see contact information below).  Your churches will receive 10% giving for this offering.

The Pt. Loma Speech and Debate Team – First Place

The Pt Loma Speech and Debate team won First Place in the Four Year Sweepstakes Division at the PSCFA Swing Championship tournament this past weekend by Cal State University of Los Angeles, against many top colleges and universities like Cal State Long Beach, Northern Arizona University and UCLA.  Over 40 Colleges and Universities competed at this large regional event, including top 2 and 4 year programs from throughout California and Arizona.  In addition to receiving the 9 all academic awards mentioned in last week’s note, and speaking with potential recruits from some of our top competitors, our students won many top awards in both debate and individual events.

Our Novices also won Second Place Novice Sweepstakes, and PLNU Senior and team co-president Chris Gutierrez won one of only two Bovero Awards offered to outstanding league competitors from four year schools in PSCFA.  It has also been exciting to see our alumni like Andrew Hoag,  Josh Cangelosi, Cynthia Laviere and Tim Kamermayer  have gone on to help coach other top programs in the area, even when their teams occasionally beat their alma mater.  Ouch. Special thanks to the PLNU alumni like Prof. Melissa Lazaro, Ben Kautzer, Jordan Cherry, and Leia Larson who have spent so much time this year helping coach our own large group of competitors.

The PLNU Men’s Ensemble “Pointless”

This is a male A Cappella group that placed second in the International Competition of Collegiate at Cappella’s West Regional Quarterfinals on Valentine’s Day.  They will now move to the semi-finals in Beverly Hills on March 28th.  Congratulations Pointless!
