Encouraging Reports and Hopeful Expectation

Our District Church gathered at our annual Assembly last month and experienced God's presence with great joy.  And the reports of a near record number of new members as well as leading the denomination in Sunday School and Discipleship Ministry gains adds to our thankfulness.  You can see more details by going to our website and read my annual report.

But all that is said and done is a result of the faithful work of our local churches led by great pastors and staff.  Please take time to read these reports (we expect more to come in from pastors in the next few days which will be added.)  Here is the link:

https://sites.google.com/a/norcal.org/reports/Home

Finally, I ask you to join in the prayer work needed to prepare for the General Assembly that is to convene in a few days.  We will elect three new General Superintendents and there are many challenges in facing the changing world.  But we have confidence that your prayers will be effective in appealing to the triune God as we align our purpose with His.

“Thank you” to the Santa Rosa Church for hosting such a wonderful time for all of us that attended the District Assembly, the NMI and NYI Conventions!  You made us feel special.  ALL of you were APPRECIATED, from the parking lot directors, janitors (great job!) to Jenny, office staff; and everyone that helped make it a success.  We thank Rev. Rick and Donna Bassett, Joel and Amy Tippitt, and Chris Thompson for the fabulous music and hospitality!  We were also happy to celebrate the ordination of Rev. Joel Tippitt at his home church.

Also, a special “thank you” to Nancy Fong, a District Advisory Board member that put together the reception for the ordinands and the retirees. She decorated tables, made the flower arrangements, made the boutonnières and the ladies long stemmed orchid arrangements and set-up.  We are grateful to you and your expertise!  Thanks to David Fong, Nancy’s husband, that assisted in helping with the set-up and take-down.

Churches be sure and treat your pastor and their spouse to some great fellowship with other pastors on the district.  The grounds at Mt. Hermon are surrounded by trees and can be very relaxing and reflective for them. It is also a wonderful time for them to renew friendships with other pastors on the district.

Updates on Churches & Pastors

Rev. Donabel Martin (NYI President) will be the new pastor at the San Francisco New Start Ministries.  She began the first week in June.  “Congrats” to Rev. Martin!  Donabel was previously the associate/youth pastor at the Vallejo First Church.

Rev. Kwang Hoon “David” Lee is the new pastor at the Vallejo Korean Church in Vallejo.  He and his wife, Mira, and their two sons will enjoy their new church home.  We “welcome” them back to the Norcal District family!  Rev. Lee was previously the pastor of the Sunnyvale Korean Church.

Rev. Michael Bell from Willow Creek Church - We just had our first Home Group at the Hoopa Indian Reservation in which 14 were there for our first meeting.  It started with a potluck dinner, and then we used the "Rendezvous" material. We watched the opening sermon for our session, even though the material was designed for a 40 day event it seemed to work as a 40 week event too.  So pray for us, as I was told that more people are coming next week...God willing.  We may have to put up a tent and start a new church in Hoopa!  God is good!

Rev. Bell received encouraging notes from Dr. Jim Cooper (The Point), Rev. Bob Dipert (Arcata/McKinleyville Church), and Dr. John Calhoun, our D. S. about his new ministry.

Rev. Karl MasonHayward First Church, for the past six months we have been feeding the homeless “Beans-n-rice for Jesus Christ” every Wednesday, at 4:00 p.m.  We have fed their stomachs and fed their souls.  This last Wednesday, we organized them into the “Open Air Church of the Nazarene”, a ministry of the Hayward Church of the Nazarene.  Over the last six months we have fed our ministered to as many as 60 or as little as 30, depending on the weather.  This is a vital ministry point with prayer, a message, and food.

We give them a message of hope and that we care.  We pray with them for their needs real or made up, and we feed them.  One person told me last Wednesday that it was the only meal he would get all week.  This was after his third helping of beans–n-rice.  Other countries are not the only place where a church can be started under a tree, as we are doing it under trees in a park.  See the pictures of some of the people in the open air album at the Hayward Church of the Nazarene Facebook page, Hayward Nazarene.

Grocery Outlet is a large chain of grocery stores that recently opened a new store in Hayward.  We were able to help them with their grand opening.  We had a hot dog sale, helped keep isles stocked, clean and bagged for cashiers, did cart runs and waved signs.  It was a day filled with fun and hard work.  We were able to earn $577 to help send kids to camp!

Because of the relationship we have built with this store, we now get their day old bread for our food for service program.  It has been a great blessing from God to be able to work with our community to reach people who are hungry, homeless, and in need of Jesus.  One more note, a great blessing of the day was that a woman sought me out as a pastor and asked for prayer for her husband who only has about two months to live from cancer and for her daughter who was mugged.  I was able to pray for her right in the store while other customers looked on and some of them joining in as I prayed…God is good!  J

Norcal Dist. Senior High Camp “Catch the Spirit”

This year Senior High Camp will be an entirely different feel and flair.  Camp will be in Monterey and will be part of the incredible THREE Day music festival- SPIRITWEST COAST!  We will be camping at the Living Hope Church at night and attending the music festival during the day.  We will be able to see bands like Toby Mac, Family Force 5, Dave Crowder Band, Hawk Nelson, Disciple, Kutless, MercyMe and many others.

There are special activities like inflatable zones, basketball, skate-board park and rock-climbing wall to name a few.  There are special speakers and optional seminars on a variety of topics concerning culture and Christianity.  Weaved through the event, we will meet to reflect on how God is speaking to us through what we are hearing and seeing.  This is an exciting change-of-pace for Senior High Camp.

Look for more inf. on cost, camping, connecting and other special stuff to come.  To get the inside scoop on Spirit West Coast, go to the link below:

General Assembly and Convention in Orlando

Continue to pray for the General Assembly and Conventions as the delegates are preparing to arrive in Florida.  Pray for travel safety as well as for some of our delegates that may still be waiting on visas.  Some of the delegates will travel a minimum of 23 hours, pray for health and strength as they participate in a great opportunity.  Also pray that the Holy Spirit will descend upon this gathering of Nazarenes in the midst of business and celebrating worship together.

If you Missed District Convention-Here’s a quick update!

Your contributions to the Foundation for the Legacy to our Youth (F.L.Y.) is a perpetual gift to the young people of our District.  This morning, we stand at: $43,852 in our Foundation.  We’d like to top $50,000 this year.  Your tax-deductible gift will help get us there.  This is a special foundation to help send our young people to the mission field for a week or two to give them insight into missions.  If you would like to help, send your tax deductible gift to our District NMI Treasurer Donna Richard (2435 Felt St., No. 42, Santa Cruz, CA 95062).

Last year, you gave 650,000 DIMES for the starving people of Ethiopia and Eritrea.  In the past seven years, you have given 4,555,000 DIMES (including this year’s total).  Please send your check to the Global Treasurer with this number on the memo line: ACS-1011.   One dime will feed one person in Africa for one day!  Save those dimes!

Tylenol Update.  We have been faithfully collecting Tylenol tablets and capsules for 15 years now.  Do we stop?  Are we finished?  The pills go to the hospital in Kudjip, Papua New Guinea, and that hospital has just expanded.  Do hospitals expand because fewer patients come for assistance?  No, they expand because more patients need our help.  We cannot stop.  We are their source for acetaminophen, about 300 pills per day.   We do this every year and we will not give in or give up...we will just keep giving.

Our Partnerships with the Eastern and Northern European churches are vibrant, but not all churches are participating.  We don’t need to know why, we just need every church to partner up with one of our works, and build those relationships.  This is not just a financial bond, but a great spiritual and emotional connection.  Contact Linda Sprowl (Linda@NLNC.org) for more details.

INDIA - What a gift God has given to us to partner with this small village of Churachandpur, Manipur.  We are partnering with all 12 Districts of our Southwest USA Region.  We plan to send 24 W&W teams in these next 4 years, at least 2 from our District.  Marvin Pounds, pastor at Pittsburg First Church, will be leading our Work and Witness teams to India. If you are interested, stay tuned for further details or contact Pastor Marvin (marvin.pounds@norcal.org).  The plan is to build a three story building that will serve as a health care center, a preschool, and a place for pastors to come for ministerial training.  Pray for the Lord’s direction in what part He would have you play in allowing this to come to fruition.  It may be financial, physical labor or the willingness to pray for everyone that can give and or go.

World Mission Radio Broadcast

June is the time to think about the way that the Radio, TV and the Internet affect your life.  For many folks around the world this is their way to hear about hope for their life for their tomorrows by way of Jesus Christ.  It takes $4.00 a minute to air the Gospel somewhere in our world.  Help our world hear the great news, how many minutes are you willing to sponsor?   Take part when your church takes this special offering this month and know that your dollars will reach the utter most part of the world.
